Hibs boss expects Gretna resolution

Fri 14 Mar, 10:30 AM

Mixu Paatelainen does not expect Gretna to fold and have their results scrapped - but admits he will be an unhappy man if that proves the case. The Hibs boss believes the Scottish Premier League would be rendered a "shambles" if the turmoil at Raydale Park ends in Gretna going out of business, leaving the prospect of the club's previous results being erased.

Such a scenario would have a negative impact on Hibs, who have moved to within just two points of a UEFA Cup place after beating rivals Motherwell 1-0 at home in midweek.

However, if the table was re-drawn taking away teams' results against Gretna, Hibs would still be in fifth place but find themselves eight points behind Dundee United in third spot.

The Tannadice outfit would be the beneficiaries of Gretna's downfall, having taken just three points from three games against the Black & Whites this term while Hibs have picked up a maximum of nine.

Paatelainen cannot see such a situation developing but it remains possible after Gretna's perilous position worsened yesterday afternoon.

Just 10 players have indicated they are willing to face Aberdeen tomorrow as doubts surface over insurance and future payments.

Paatelainen, who could be missing an entire midfield for the weekend meeting with Kilmarnock due to injuries, said: "I don't think Gretna's results will be scrapped, no. That would be a big shambles.

"The successful teams against them would be punished and the teams who have not been that successful against them then get the benefit.

"There is no logic there at all, it works against everything so I don't think that will happen. I would be very disappointed if that was the solution, but I can't see that happening.

"Why punish teams who do well? Why? That's a big question. It's not our fault."

Paatelainen expects a solution to the predicament Gretna and the league find themselves in but admits he has more matters to concern himself with, namely his growing injury list.

Brian Kerr (ankle), Merouane Zemmama (knee) and Ross Chisholm (elbow) are all doubtful for Killie's visit, while Ian Murray is suspended.

He added: "Whatever happens at Gretna, I don't decide that but I think there will be a solution where everybody is happy.

"But I've got my own problems this weekend without worrying about it."
