BORMIO, Italy (AFP) - American Lindsey Vonn won the overall women's World Cup alpine skiing title here on Friday after finishing in the top fifteen in the slalom which was won by Austria's Marlies Schild.
The 23-year-old from Vail, Colorado was virtually assured of taking the Crystal Globe after finishing second in Thursday's Super-G.
She had a 197-point advantage on Germany's Maria Riesch with two events to go, and needed just three points to ensure success.
"For me it's like winning an Olympic gold medal, it's incredible," said the American, who secured the women's downhill title weeks ago.
"Maria said she wasn't going to win both slaloms but it's never over till it's over. I couldn't be happier."
The United States achieve the double as Bode Miller, the 2005 champion, has already secured his second overall men's title.
The last time Americans won both overall titles in the same year was in 1983 when Tamara McKinney and Phil Mahre dominated the World Cup series.
Schild won the women's World Cup slalom Crystal Globe after winning the final race of the season on Friday.
