Misselot A Hit In Coral Cup

Fri 14 Mar, 03:09 PM

Naiad Du Misselot (7-1) denied Kicks For Free by a short head in the Coral Cup after another thrilling finish at Cheltenham on Friday.

Davy Russell brought the Ferdy Murphy-trained gelding from the rear to lead close home and just hold Kicks For Free (11-1).

Junior (12-1) was a gallant third with Mendo (14-1) fourth.

The Baltiman set a fierce gallop forging eight lengths clear of the pack, which was led by The Package at one stage.

The long-time leader was collared by Junior after the second-last with Song Of Songs also looking dangerous.

But the fast pace set it up for the hold-up horses and it was Naiad Du Misselot who gained the day on the nod from Kicks For Free.

Russell, who had to settle for second aboard New Alco, Native Jack and Mossbank earlier in the week, was a relieved man after landing the spoils.

He said: "I've had so many seconds all week I couldn't believe I would ride a winner.

"It's great, Ferdy has pulled it out of the bag for me again. God bless the little horse and Ferdy said he was on-song today.

"I was speaking to Graham (Lee) and I'd like to thank him as he told me exactly what to do, to chip away on the inside and stalk round."

North Yorkshire-based Murphy said: "From where I was standing it looked like we'd held on and I'm delighted it's been a great week for the north.

"My inclination is to throw him out into the field and then bring him back novice chasing next season."

Paul Nicholls, trainer of the runner-up, said: "I shot myself in the foot by winning at Wincanton as he went up 10lb, but that was a brilliant run.

Similarly pleased was Paul Green, owner of third-placed Junior.

Green said: "I'm thrilled to bits with him and if he runs again it will be in good competition.

"It could possibly be at Aintree, but otherwise he's still a novice for next season."
