DOUBLE: Silver Pivotal and Ninth House.
After a week of weather chaos, the betdirect.com Winter Derby at Lingfield on Saturday is aptly-named.
The highlight of the all-weather season and taking pride of place on an eight-race card, the 10-furlong event is relatively richly-endowed and accordingly has attracted a decent field.
But they will all have to go some to beat the Gerard Butler-trained filly Silver Pivotal.
Lightly-raced and held in some regard, she has the scope to be a force this year and was in line for a Group One tilt before her 2007 season was cut short.
She reappeared over this course and distance in January where she looked something of a handicap snip if ready to do herself justice. She duly did and very much caught the eye in the way she went about her task.
Having to be switched to make her run, she picked up well to account for the in-form Alpes Maritimes by a length.
She was progressive in her three runs last year, culminating in her sinking a Sir Michael Stoute-trained hotpot at York's Dante meeting in May.
With her suitability to this surface guaranteed and definitely having trained on, she must have a huge chance of giving the capable Butler a deserved high-profile success.
Chief supporting contest is the betdirect.com Spring Cup, a Listed contest over seven furlongs.
A chance is taken on Tasdeer from the Michael Jarvis stable here.
He had clearly been showing plenty at home as he was sent off joint-favourite for his debut at Lingfield in September and showed ability in finishing fourth.
The Rahy colt more than built on that when bolting up next time at Yarmouth in the manner of a potentially smart performer.
For whatever reason he failed to give his running when stepped up to Group Three company at Newmarket in October and trailed home last of the eight runners.
It is a fair to assume he is better than that and he deserves another chance to confirm the impression made in his maiden win.
The betdirect.com Hever Sprint Stakes is another Listed affair, this time over the minimum trip of five furlongs, and Excusez Moi is expected to strike again.
Clive Brittain's six-year-old bounced back to form when scoring over a furlong further at this track last month, lowering the course record in the process.
Brittain has always thought a lot of this horse and despite disappointing towards the end of the last turf season, Excusez Moi is evidently back on form now.
Ninth House makes plenty of appeal in the Lingfield Park For Weddings Handicap.
The six-year-old has been in tremendous nick of late, rattling up a four-timer in company with Jim Crowley.
That sequence would have been five as Crowley blamed himself for a defeat here in January - he begged Littmoden to keep him on the horse and has not looked back since.
He was another on the mark at Wolverhampton a week ago. The handicapper took a dim view of that five-length victory and he now sits on a perch of 88.
However, given he has won off 84 in the past and is flying at present, hopes are high he can do the business again.
Pegasus Again was placed at Royal Ascot as a juvenile and is fancied to make a successful return in the 32Red.com Best Casino Since 2003 Conditions Stakes at Kempton.
Arnold Layne hit the headlines for the wrong reasons when catapulting Tony McCoy into the ground at Warwick in January, leaving the 12-times champion with a race against time to be fit for the Cheltenham Festival.
But he can put his name in lights this time with victory in what promises to be a gruelling John Smith's Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter.
The Caroline Bailey-trained nine-year-old has very few miles on the clock and - that blip in the Classic Chase apart - is on an upward curve.
All ground comes alike to him and he has won his last four completed starts, proving his liking for a real test on numerous occasions.
Punchestowns looks a nice prospect for Nicky Henderson and can continue his education in the Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Novices' Hurdle.
Star Beat won nicely at Doncaster two weeks ago and Keith Reveley's charge still looks on a decent mark in the St Patrick's Celebration Handicap Hurdle at Newcastle.
Trisons Star was successful at Newcastle last month and can follow up in Wetherby's totescoop6 Handicap Chase.
