Uefa Cup Clockwatch

Fri 14 Mar, 12:09 AM

  • All times GMT.

2153: The full-time whistle blows and Bolton have joined Everton and Tottenham in going out. Rangers are the only British team left flying the flag in the quarter-finals.

2152: Sporting happy to run the clock down in Bolton territory. Samuel evidently isn't happy with that, so fouls Liedson. Silly, silly play.

2151: Sporting fans and players alike are furious - they expected Bolton to give them the ball back after Tiui left the field.

2150: Tiui leaves the field on a stretcher, which he quickly jumps off. That'll add a minute onto the added time, though.

2149: Again the corner comes to nothing and Bolton clear. They need the ball up the other end, though, as we enter three minutes of added time.

2148: The corner is worked into the Bolton box and Hunt turns it behind again.

2147: Corner to Sporting as Adrien's long shot is deflected behind.

2146: Guthrie is booked for a clumsy challenge in midfield. He can have no complaints.

2145: Three minutes of normal time to play.

2144: Sporting break as Bolton push forward in numbers and Al Habsi has to turn the ball over the bar for another corner from Moutinho's shot.

2144: Sporting bring Gladstone on for Izmailov.

2142: GOAL - PEREIRINHA. Sporting go in front on the night as Pereirinha cuts in from the right and fires the ball into the top corner - but Bolton needed to score before that goal went in and that situation hasn't changed. The only difference is a goal will now only be enough for extra-time whereas before it would have taken them through. Sporting 1 Bolton 0 (Agg: 2-1).

2141: Bolton make a meal of the clearance but Sporting are equally ineffective when they are gifted with possession again. That 30 seconds of action pretty much sums up the game.

2140: Sporting force a corner, which Moutinho will whip in.

2138: Into the last 10 minutes of normal time in Lisbon.

2137: Liedson has a great chance to give Sporting the lead on the night, but fires his shot straight at Al Habsi, who parries it to safety.

2136: Eleven minutes to go in Lisbon and there's still no splitting the sides.

2134: Bolton replace Helguson with Nathan Woolfe. What an occasion for the youngster to make his first appearance for the Trotters!

2133: Sporting bring Adrien Silva on for Romagnoli.

2133: Abel has a decent shooting opportunity from distance, but it sails over.

2133: Grimi takes a slide on the astroturf around the Bolton dug-out and lands on his backside. He gets back to his feet gingerly but is fit enough to take the throw.

2132: The Sporting fans are starting to get on the back of their side now, with boos ringing out as a long ball goes awry. Bolton will be hoping it affects the players in the last 17 minutes.

2131: Guthrie's corner is gathered by Patricio at the second attempt.

2131: Samuel makes a good break down the left and forces a corner off Moutinho.

2129: A long throw is hoisted into the Sporting box but Patricio is able to gather.

2128: Bolton replace Andranik with Daniel Braaten.

2128: The ball is returned to the Bolton area and Al Habsi has to gather down by his left-hand post as Liedson heads goalwards.

2127: Pereirinha fires in a shot from distance which forces Al Habsi to plunge to his right. He didn't get a touch, but it's a corner anyway as it took a deflection.

2125: Patricio comes sliding out towards the edge of his area to gather the ball and the Bolton players appeal for a free-kick, but as he stayed in his box, there's nothing doing.

2123: The corner is a poor one and Sporting clear easily. Vukcevic makes way for Tiui.

2122: Guthrie curls a high ball into the Sporting area and it's turned behind for a corner.

2120: That's it and Rangers are through! They've been outplayed from start to finish tonight by a Bremen side who had over 30 shots, but - and it's a big but - they did the hard work in the first leg at Ibrox and will take their place in tomorrow's quarter-final draw. For the record, it's finished Werder Bremen 1 Rangers 0 on the night, with the Gers through 2-1 on aggregate.

2120: A long throw is hoisted into the Rangers box but it's headed to safety. The ball is lifted back in and McGregor flaps a little before his defence come to his rescue.

2120: Just 30 seconds left for Rangers to hold out now.

2119: Bremen work the ball back into the Rangers box but Naldo's flick-on to Sanogo is wasted as the Ivorian diverts it behind in his attempts to find Harnik.

2118: We're just into two minutes of added time in Bremen.

2117: Bodies strewn in the Rangers box as Bremen lay siege to their goal, but when the ball breaks to Jensen his shot is high, wide and not particularly handsome.

2116: Just 90 seconds of normal time left in Bremen.

2115: Back in Bremen, Naldo belts in a shot which McGregor has to turn behind for yet another corner. Bremen have now had 32 shots on goal to Rangers' four. But if the score stays the same the Gers won't care a jot as it's them heading into the quarter-finals as things stand.

2115: Corner to Sporting in Lisbon but it's headed clear by Andranik.

2114: Bremen force two corners in quick succession. Rangers are under the cosh as the clock ticks down. Just four minutes of normal time to go.

2113: McGregor pulls off an absolute wonder save to keep Rangers' aggregate advantage in tact. The ball was worked into the path of the unmarked Sanogo around seven yards out and he diverted it goalwards only for McGregor to push it up onto his crossbar. It's a great save (Banks-esque even), but in truth he shouldn't have been given the chance to get to it. That should have been a goal.

2112: Ferguson snubs the chance to take the corner short and curls it into the box. It backfires as Bremen reclaim possession and carry it clear quickly - as they need to.

2112: Rangers force a corner and with seven minutes left this could be the perfect chance to kill some time.

2111: Harnik goes for glory from the angle of the Rangers box on the right but it's a terrible shot. Signs of desperation from Bremen there - very little chance of beating McGregor from that angle.

2110: A note for anyone expecting more regular updates for the Bolton game - don't worry, you're missing nothing. It's been very flat in Lisbon so far.

2109: Diego fires in a shot for Bremen, but it's always curling well wide.

2108: Into the last 10 minutes of normal time in Bremen and it's all hands to the pump at the back for Rangers. As it has been for much of the last 80.

2107: In Lisbon, Andranik is the first Bolton name in the referee's notebook.

2106: Another corner is hoisted into the Rangers box but Mertesacker again heads wide.

2103: Rangers bring McCulloch on for Novo, who has had a thankless task tonight. At the same time, Bremen bring on Harnik for Owomoyela in an attacking substitution.

2103: Sanogo tries to flick a ball through Papac's legs but it bounces back to him. The Ivorian then fires in a snapshot which deflects out for a corner.

2102: Back under way in Lisbon. At almost exactly the same moment, Bremen nearly get the second they need to force extra-time but McGregor gathers Hunt's curling cross well.

2101: Bremen force another corner - any spell of Rangers possession is brief. The corner is floated in deep to the 6ft 5in Naldo but his header is off target.

2100: Nice passing movement from Rangers sees Novo get a yard of space down the right. He curls the ball into the box but Wiese gathers well under pressure from the advancing Whittaker.

2059: The problem for Rangers is that with Novo shackled, McGregor has to look for another outlet with his long kicks - and he's not succeeding. A fourth successive goal-kick has just sailed out of play for a Bremen throw. Painful to watch.

2058: Novo has seen so little the ball it's easy to forget he's even playing in this one. Every long ball from the Rangers defence is all too easily dealt with by the Bremen defenders - he's got an almost impossible job against two strong operators.

2057: McGregor comes out bravely to gather the ball well under pressure from Sanogo.

2056: Hunt curls a lovely free-kick into the Rangers box but it's headed clear at the back post. These are nervy times for the Gers...and there's still 22 minutes to go!

2055: A rare poor pass from Hunt brings a rare moment's relief to Rangers.

2053: Bremen bring Sanogo on for Almeida. The man replaced opts to hurdle the hoardings and head straight down the tunnel rather than return to the bench. Not sure if he's injured or just annoyed to be replaced.

2052: Twenty six minutes and counting for Rangers. Their defending is becoming increasingly desperate. Can they weather what promises to be a constant barrage?

2050: Nice passing move from Rangers and Novo has a good crossing chance from the right but he can only find the first man when Whittaker is well placed at the edge of the box.

2049: Broadfoot goes down in the Bremen box but it's much too theatrical. Even if he was fouled he made way too much of it.

2047: Half-time in Lisbon. Sporting going through on away goals as things stand, but they've not shown particularly much tonight and Bolton should be confident of finding a way through.

2046: GOAL - DIEGO. Finally Bremen find the goal their dominance has deserved. A poor defensive header falls to Diego and he flicks the ball onto his left foot with a lovely touch before driving it past McGregor. Werder Bremen 1 Rangers 0 (Agg: 1-2).

2046: Al Habsi has to plunge to his left to save from Romagnoli.

2045: Rangers bring Steven Whittaker on for Adam.

2044: Another corner is whipped into the Rangers box but it bisects Almedia and Rosenberg perfectly.

2043: Still pretty flat in Lisbon. The home side haven't really shown much to scare Bolton, but in their defence they don't have to - the Trotters must score or they are out.

2042: McGregor can only parry a long-range shot from Jensen but it reaches safety. The ball is eventually worked back into the Rangers box and McGregor catches bravely. Almeida clatters into him and tempers flare briefly but it's much ado about not very much.

2042: Cuellar does well to come across and block a shot from Almeida just outside the Rangers box. More worrying signs for the Gers. Thirty six minutes left and counting.

2041: Boenisch cuts in from left-back onto his right foot and rifles in a low shot but it's always skipping well wide. Almeida - one of four Bremen men in the middle - is furious and embarks on an arm-waving rant at his team-mate as the ball strikes the hoardings behind the goal.

2040: Vaz Te looks really lively for Bolton when he gets on the ball, and it's no surprise that he draws the first bookable challenge of the night inLisbon from Moutinho.

2039: The corner is straight onto the head of Mertesacker but he diverts it wide. He should have done better there - at least forcing McGregor into a save.

2039: Bremen working a shooting chance around 25 yards out and McGregor has to push over Jensen's drive. Comfortable save, but it still needed making.

2038: Rangers force a corner with their first real break of the second half, but it's too long and the header back across goal is easily gathered by Wiese.

2037: Sporting knock the ball around nicely as the break towards the Bolton area. It's worked to Romagnoli but once again he fires well off target. Poor finishing once again.

2036: Back in Bremen and it's the home side on the attack once again. This time Hunt cuts in and fires in a shot with his left foot, but it's off target when it leaves his foot and curls even further wide in the air.

2035: Owomoyela works himself a shooting chance for Bremen but it's always sailing well over McGregor's crossbar. Lisbon also fashion an opportunity, but Romagnoli fires well wide.

2034: Back under way in Bremen.

2032: Sporting have a decent chance to go in front as Pereirinha's cross from the right is flicked on by Moutinho but a stretching Izmailov can only divert the ball over the bar.

2030: Al Habsi gathers a cross from the Bolton right. The Trotters 'keeper hasn't had much to do so far, but what he has had to do he's done well.

2028: Bolton break down the right again - that's where they're getting most joy so far - but Guthrie's cross is easily cleared at the front post.

2025: Bolton just pegged back inside their own territory for the minute. No real danger as such, but they could do with clearing their lines.

2022: The Rangers game has definitely been a better spectacle than the Bolton one so far - it's been like a chess match so far in Lisbon, though the difference in tonight's two ties is most probably due to the scorelines from the first legs.

2021: The corner is curled into the box but Meite heads clear at the back post.

2020: Sporting force a corner now, with captain Cahill heading the ball behind.

2018: Bolton on the attack in Lisbon, and Danny Guthrie forces a second corner inside a minute with a powerful shot which Rui Patricio needlessly turns behind.

2016: Unsurprisingly the last action of the half is in the Rangers box, but the Gers hold firm once again. Half-time in the Westerstadion and the SPL leaders have been on the rack pretty much from the first minute to the 46th. But it's still 0-0 on the night, meaning Rangers still lead 2-0 on aggregate. Something tells me there won't be much paint left on the wall in the away dressing room in 15 minutes or so, though.

2015: Hunt dinks a lovely ball into the Rangers box but Naldo has to stretch every inch of his frame to get his foot to it - and it's easy for McGregor to gather.

2014: Adam is booked in Bremen and should Rangers get through to the quarter-finals, he will miss the first leg. Definitely a booking but it was a poor pass from Broadfoot that put him in the position.

2012: Little to report from Lisbon so far. Bolton looking lively, though.

2011: Diego swings another corner into the Rangers box, but it's headed clear.

2009: It's Naldo who takes the Bremen free-kick but it's straight at McGregor. Rangers spring on the counter but Adam's curling left-footed shot poleaxes Novo rather than flying in.

2009: More promising signs for Bolton in Lisbon as Vaz Te takes the ball down on the edge of the Sporting box and turns andfires in a shot. Unfortunately for him, it's in the side-netting.

2008: Free-kick to Bremen around 35 yards out centrally as Ferguson is penalised for a foul on Hunt. Bremen are spoilt for choice here, with Naldo or Diego the likely takers.

2007: Hunt marauds down the right for Bolton onto a lovely ball from Stelios and forces a throw deep in Sporting territory. Encouraging for the Trotters as they carved Sporting apart pretty easily down the inside-right channel there.

2006: Diego appears to go down all too easily, but a replay shows he was on the receiving end of an accidental slap in the face from Hemdani as he turned away from him. Free-kick.

2005: The tempo seems to have dropped somewhat in Bremen. Rangers will be hoping they have drawn the sting from their German hosts after their bright start.

2002: Free-kick to Sporting inside the first 20 seconds. Vukcevic curls the ball in but Al Habsi plunges away to his right to push the ball around the post. Nice confidence-booster.

    2001: Under way in Lisbon.

2000: Free-kick to Bremen down their left. Diego floats the ball into the box and McGregor catches unchallenged under his own crossbar. Poor ball in.

1959: Almost out of nothing Novo breaks into the Bremen box and draws a good save from Wiese. The ball drops to Dailly but his low shot is blocked. Bremen hit on the counter-attack and Almeida looks to be on the end of another cross, until Cuellar powerfully heads clear. Muted appeals from Bremen for a penalty, but it looked to be nothing more than a strong challenge.

1958: The teams are in the tunnel in Lisbon for tonight's other game.

1956: Almeida goes oh so close to giving Bremen the lead with a towering header, but it skips just wide of the post. He'd been penalised in any case for catching McGregor with his leading arm so it wouldn't have counted any way.

1955: McGregor has to plunge away to his left to save well from Owomoyela.

1954: Finally Rangers string more than 10 passes together in one move, though it comes to an end when Adam and Broadfoot have a breakdown in communication and Bremen carry it clear.

1953: From another Bremen corner Naldo tries an audacious back-flick into the Rangers area, but it drifts through to McGregor. We're 24 minutes in. The only positive for the Gers so far is that they haven't conceded.

1952: McGregor pulls off a good save to deny Jensen. His powerful shot - from a Rosenberg knockdown - was arrowing into the Rangers net. Lovely flowing football from Bremen.

1950: Uncomfortable viewing for Walter Smith so far - he's sitting on the Rangers bench with arms firmly folded probably wondering how to get his side into this game.

1949: Finally Rangers string a few passes together but Ferguson gifts possession back to Bremen. Unforgivable from the Gers skipper there. He's hardly leading by example.

1948: A cross comes in from the Rangers right this time, but Almedia's header is over the bar. Seventy two minutes left and counting.

1947: Diego floats a lovely ball into the Rangers box for Borowski. He has time to take it down but opts for a first-time shot hoping to catch McGregor napping. It sails over the bar.

1947: Bremen force their third and fourth corner of the night in quick succession and though neither come to much, at this rate there will be plenty of 'clock-watching' in this clockwatch. Seventy four minutes left and counting.

1945: Back in Bremen, Rosenberg's snapshot is parried by McGregor and Rangers clear. Having bitten their fingernails down, any Rangers fans brave enough to still bewatching this must surely be watching through their hands. The Gers just haven't got going yet.

1945: Fifteen minutes to go before Bolton's second leg in Lisbon kicks off, and the team news is in. No surprise given he has left 12 players at home, but Gary Megson's side shows plenty of changes, with no Kevin Nolan, Jussi Jaaskelainen, Kevin Davies, Matt Taylor, El Hadji Diouf, Andy O'Brien, Ricardo Gardner, Ivan Campo or Gavin McCann. Ali Al Habsi is again in goal, with a back four of Nicky Hunt, Abdoulaye Meite, captain Gary Cahill and Jlloyd Samuel. Joey O'Brien sits in front of that quartet with Stelios Giannakopoulos, Danny Guthrie, Andranik Teymourian and Ricardo Vaz Te in midfield, leaving Heidar Helguson on his own up front. Sporting have leading goalscorer Liedson back in their line-up, with the Brazilian having recovered from a thigh injury.

1943: Borowski drives an angled ball from right to left but Almeida's header back into the centre of the box is gathered by McGregor unchallenged. We mustn't forget Rangers are protecting a two-goal lead from the first leg, but you have to think they'll need to up their game.

1942: Stats can be used to prove pretty much anything, but the possession stats say Werder have had 74% of the ball in the first 11 minutes here. And it's hard to argue with that.

1941: Rangers caught by some slick passing and Hunt stands the ball up for Almeida at the back post, but his header is over the top. Should have done better.

1940: Ten minutes gone and the only thing you can say for Rangers is that their two-goal advantage from the first leg is still in tact. The latest Bremen effort on goal comes from Naldo, but his long-range effort never really troubles McGregor.

1937: Rather than choosing to find one of his defenders for an 'easy' ball, McGregor belts it long and Bremen pick it up all too easily. Silly.

1937: Jensen is penalised for fouling Barry Ferguson around five yards outside the Rangers box. A chance for the Gers to knock the ball around and ease the pressure?

1936: This is turning into a match version of the training game attack versus defence. Rangers simply can't get on the ball and Bremen are coming forward in waves. The Gers need someone to show some composure, get hold of possession and calm a few nerves.

1935: Rangers finally get the ball in midfield - only for two of their players to collide. Boenisch picks it up and advances to the edge of the Rangers box, but his subsequent shot flies over McGregor's bar. There will be a few fingernails bitten in the Rangers end already.

1934: This could be a long night for Rangers. They just can't get on the ball, though this time Hunt's break down the left ends with him knocking the ball out for a Rangers goal-kick.

1933: All Bremen in the early stages. They force another corner which Mertesacker heads into the path of Rosenberg. It's a great chance for him, but he swipes wildly wide of goal.

1932: The corner is headed clear but drops to Daniel Jensen on the edge of the box. His angled drive drifts across the goal to the relief of Allan McGregor.

1932: Good early possession for Bremen forces a corner - and Diego takes the opportunity to call for more support from the home crowd.

1930: Bremen get us under way in the Weserstadion.

1925: Just five minutes until kick-off in Rangers' clash with Werder Bremen in Germany and Lee McCulloch has been left on the bench with the Gers making just one change. Daniel Cousin's fractured jaw rules him out and Jean-Claude Darcheville is absent with an Achilles injury so Nacho Novo comes into the side to play as the lonestriker. Holding midfielders Brahim Hemdani and Christian Dailly are handed the task of stopping Bremen midfield genius Diego, who starts despite a recent dressing room bust-up with Aaron Hunt. The latter is one of three strikers for the German side, while Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf keeps faith in goalkeeper Tim Wiese despite him conceding eight goals in the last two matches.
