Eurosport - Fri, 14 Mar 05:02:00 2008

Your blow-by-blow recap of day two of the second Test in Wellington.

Ambrose century, CRICKET - 0

9.30pm - England 291-5 (90 overs) - Still smarting from being dismissed for 110 during the 189-run opening Test defeat at Hamilton and 81 in their previous outing against Sri Lanka at Galle before Christmas, England's batsman know they owe a performance and will be looking to get well over 400 with Tim Ambrose tantalisingly close to his maiden Test hundred in only his second appearance.

9.50pm - England 300-6 (95 overs) - From the 19th ball of the morning, Ambrose brings up his century. It's far from the most elegant shot of his career as he gets a thick edge off Jacob Oram wide of second slip. He becomes the first England keeper to score a hundred overseas since Alec Stewart 11 years ago. But he departs in the next over as he edges Kyle Mills to Ross Taylor at second slip for 102.

10.10pm - England 312-7 (100 overs) - Stuart Broad's second Test innings is not a long one as he looks to clip Oram down the leg side but he misses completely and see the ball strike the bottom of his thigh pad and then hit leg stump.

10.30pm - England 335-7 (104 overs) - Paul Collingwood may need to up the tempo now and he rocks back and plays a dismissive pull shot off Oram to the mid-wicket fence. Mark Gillespie comes into the attack and when he conjures up a 79mph half-tracker, Ryan Sidebottom does the only decent thing and pulls it to the fence. The Robert Plant hair-alike then tickles Oram off his pads down to the fine leg boundary and this partnership is 30.

10.50pm - England 342 (107 overs) - Collingwood goes lbw to Gillespie. Rudi Koertzen slowly raises the deadly digit as the Durham batsman looks to work the ball to mid-wicket and gets trapped on the crease. Sidebottom (14) departs soon after as he top edges an attempted hook off Gillespie and Matthew Bell takes a steepling catch at mid-wicket. Next ball Monty Panesar fends a short ball down the leg-side to Brendon McCullum and England are all out.

11.20pm - New Zealand 7-1 (5 overs) - James Anderson's fifth ball is an absolute pearler and is too good for Bell. It pitches on middle and takes the top of off-stump. Stephen Fleming comes to the middle for his final Test on his home ground.

11.30pm - New Zealand 11-2 (7 overs) - Anderson gets another with a full swinging delivery. Jamie How's outside edge is well pouched by Andrew Strauss at first slip and the Burnley Bronco is on fire. That's lunch.

12.30am - New Zealand 24-2 (12 overs) - More lateral movement after lunch and Anderson extracts the inside edge of Fleming's bat but it eludes the dive of Ambrose, diving away to his right.

12.50am - New Zealand 33-3 (16 overs) - A promising opening over from Stuart Broad but Matthew Sinclair manages to squeeze a four down to third man. But he departs when he gets a feather edge through to Ambrose, playing away from his body, off Anderson who now has 3-15 and we must thank Auckland for giving him some much needed practice last week.

1.10am - New Zealand 48-3 (21 overs) - Another thick outside edge off Broad, this time from a nervous looking Ross Taylor, eludes the diving second slip and goes to the third man boundary. The same batsman had earlier clipped Anderson through mid-wicket to the fence and the Lancastrian takes a blow with figures of 9-2-20-3.

1.30am - New Zealand 56-3 (25 overs) - Fleming has just become the first New Zealander to score 7000 Test runs and the 32nd overall but he has an escape as Collingwood puts down a low chance to his left at second slip off Sidebottom - it only just carried. Taylor celebrates with an emphatic cover drive to the pickets off Broad.

1.50am - New Zealand 78-3 (29 overs) - Broad has not been unable to offer a consistent line and when he offers width to Taylor, he is slashed away behind backward point. The next one is a similar delivery and it is cut straight to Collingwood at second slip, who totally fails to pick the ball up out of the background, and the fielder is struck on the knee when he should have caught it. Then some dismal fielding by Panesar at mid-off gifts Taylor a boundary. The same batter then lofts a four over extra cover off Collingwood and the returning Anderson is flicked off his pads by Fleming as the runs begin to come at a hurry.

2.10am - New Zealand 100-3 (34 overs) - Taylor brings up the half-century partnership with some panache, thumping Anderson through the covers for his seventh boundary. He continues to ride his luck as he flashes hard and sees a loose drive go over the top of Collingwod's head. Another let-off for the Kiwis on the brink of tea after a mix-up between the batsmen but Kevin Pietersen's throw is wide from 15 yards and Panesar is unable to collect cleanly. That's the adjournment.

2.50am - New Zealand 104-4 (38 overs) - The breakthrough for England and number four for Anderson. Fleming is caught in two minds outside off-stump and fences a catch straight to Pietersen at point.

3.10am - New Zealand 113-5 (43 overs) - Sidebottom traps Oram lbw as the big all-rounder plays down the wrong line and umpire Steve Davis is on cue to send him on his way.

3.30am - New Zealand 134-6 (46 overs) - A hint of seam movement from Anderson and Taylor feels for the ball away from his body and only succeeds in getting an outside edge through to Ambrose. McCullum is not too worried about the situation as he slashes both bowlers through the covers to the boundary in his first four balls before turning four more off his hip from his sixth delivery faced.

3.50am - New Zealand 165-7 (49 overs) - Two boundaries for Daniel Vettori off Sidebottom - the first an authentic back foot square-drive, the second a thick outside edge which finds the gap in the slip cordon and NZ have reached the follow-on mark. McCullum then clips Anderson for four and chips him over mid-on to the boundary before Vettori pulls him emphatically and that's 15 off the over. But McCullum's cameo comes to an end as he edges Broad to Strauss at first slip after a breezy 25.

4.10am - New Zealand 180-8 (53 overs) - Vettori pulls Anderson away to the mid-wicket fence but Collingwood removes Mills as the NZ number nine strokes a backfoot drive straight to Ian Bell at cover point. Panesar then produces his third piece of schoolgirl fielding as he lets a clip down to third man between his legs.

4.30am - New Zealand 198 (57.4 overs) - Gillespie is bowled through the gate by Collingwood, his third duck in a row, and then the walking wicket Martin comes to the crease. But he sticks around long enough to see Vettori bring up his fifty off just 42 balls. Pulling and driving Broad for fours before backing away and upper cutting a six over third man. Martin is eventually yorked by Collingwood and England lead by 144 on first innings.

5am - England 4-0 (5 overs) - England had 18 minutes to negotiate and they have done so successfully. They finish day two in a healthy position with a lead of 148.
