FOOTBALL: Werder Bremen attacking midfielder Diego - 0

The Brazilian's poor showing in last week's UEFA Cup last 16 first leg match against Rangers was disappointing, but seemingly not bad enough to prevent Chelsea from preparing a whopping £25 million package to bring him to the Premier League.

So, is he worth such a huge sum of money? Probably not quite so much, but his performance during the second leg back in Germany suggested he has something to offer.

Bremen may well have ended up crashing out of the UEFA Cup on Thursday, but his wonder-goal gave the German side victory on the night and proved that he is capable of producing moments of magic - the kind that can turn games.

When the ball arrived at his feet on the edge of the Rangers penalty area in the 58th minute, there seemed to be few options for him. Brahim Hemdani appeared to have Diego's route to goal well covered, but his flick over the Algerian's head to create some space was wonderfully inventive. And his shot was equally impressive, firing past the otherwise solid Allan McGregor and into the corner of the net with a crisp drive.

Okay, so he can score spectacular individual goals. But can he do anything else?

As you would expect from a Brazilian playmaker, the 23-year-old looks composed with the ball at his feet, although he is heavily one-footed and almost exclusively uses his right.

Fortunately, that right foot is particularly cultured, and on more than one occasion against Rangers, he picked open the opposition defence with perfectly timed through passes.

He demands the ball all the time and dictates most of Bremen's attacking play, sometimes dropping deep to pick up the ball and instigate attacks from more withdrawn positions.

The former Porto man also takes most of Bremen's free-kicks from wide areas, although he failed to impress in that department on Thursday. More often than not, his dead balls drifted too close to McGregor, enabling the Rangers keeper to claim without many problems.

And a further cause for concern is a common one - his penchant for over-elaboration when fouled.

Should he make a move to the Premier League, that is one aspect of his game that needs to be stamped out.
