ATP Tour - Fantasy Tennis: Fed up

Eurosport - Mon, 14 Apr 14:15:00 2008

Nobody is more upset about Roger Federer's "poor" run of form than the editors of "In or Out." But maybe as the claycourt season starts this week at the Estoril Open he can finally turn things around.....

TENNIS ROGER FEDERER - 0

As always, we humbly offer our tips on players set to compete in this week's event who could be worth picking with your two weekly transfers, hopefully giving you an edge over your rivals.

Remember you can still join the game and play against your friends, family and colleagues in a mini-League. Click on the link on the right to join up!

Group A

In: Roger Federer

Okay, so picking the most popular player in Eursport's Fantasy game and possibly the greatest player who ever lived hasn't quite worked out for us either. Federer has not gone this long into a season without reaching a final since he made it to his first career singles final in Marseille in 2000. But the world number one has to fully get over this bout of glandular fever soon if he wants to maintain that mantle in the face of fierce competition from Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal. A second rate field, a new coach in claycourt guru Jose Higueras (see link below the photo) and the motivation of a looming Roland Garros should be just what the doctor ordered.

Out: Novak Djokovic

Last week we put the struggling Nikolay Davydenko in this column and called him Russia's answer to Tim Henman. The world number four beat our pick Andy Roddick in the semi-finals and won the Miami title - often referred to as "the fifth Grand Slam". We refuse to make the same mistake twice in telling you not to pick the second seed in Estoril, so we're advising not to pick the defending champion Novak Djokovic instead. By the way, the world number three isn't even entered in the event, but we don't see this "out" pick as the least bit cowardly on our part - just sound advice. Still, should Novak defy all logic to swoop in at the very last second, claim a wild card, and win the tournament, "In or Out" cannot be blamed. As a wise man once said, when you're right 52 percent of the time you're wrong 48 percent of the time.

Group B

In: Gilles Simon

A very solid claycourt player, the Frenchman should do well against a less-than mediocre field and recapture some of the form he showed at Marseille and Rotterdam earlier this year. Every French players is going to have to start living up to their potential this spring if the host nation wants to prevent a repeat of last year's embarrassingly barren Roland Garros.

Out: Ivo Karlovic

If all goes to plan the third seed should meet Simon in the third round in Estoril, that is if the huge-serving grasscourt specialist makes it that far. Aside from a title in Houston last year, Karlovic has not had much success on the slow dirt. Normally a solid "in" pick, Karlovic should hit the bench for the claycourt season.

Group C

In: Michael Berrer

A strong performer on the claycourt Challenger circuit last season, the 27-year-old German has a very good looking draw at his first International level clay event in two years. Despite a mediocre start to the season, Berrer should be able to take what's handed to him in Portugal and win at least a couple of matches.

Out: Olivier Patience

After shocking Nikolay Davydenko in the first round last year, Patience crashed out in round two to American non-threat Vincent Spadea. Though he has a penchant for stepping up his game against top-ranked players - see a brilliant performance in a five-set loss to Novak Djokvoic at the 2007 French Open - Patience would almost certainly lose to a determined Roger Federer in the second round even if he won through his first match.

Group D

In: Marc Gicquel

The only seeded man in this group is the seventh-highest scorer in Group D. If he can get past a tough opening-round match in the form of Serbian danger-man Boris Pashanski, Gicquel has an open road to the quarter-finals.

Out: Edouard Roger-Vasselin

This will be the Frenchman's first International series event since the Australian Open, and based on his mediocre Challenger record in that time (6-8) a first-round exit is likely.
