Italian Damiano Cunego beat out Spaniard Alejandro Valverde in a sprint to claim the 54th Klasika Primavera in the Basque country.

The former Tour of Italy champion, who also won stage five of the Tour of the Basque Country on Friday, took the 171.6-km one-day race in comfortable fashion after outsprinting Valverde to the line.

The peloton easily drew in a four-man escape group after the break-away lasted 110 kilometres, and the leading duo escaped from the main group during the fifth and final climb.

Finland's Kjell Carlström of Liquigas finished fourth in front of Spanish Euskaltel rider Mikel Astarloza.
