Eurosport - Mon, 14 Apr 17:22:00 2008

A whistle-stop tour of the weekend's action around the globe, including a controversial 'Hand of God' moment in Brazil.

San Paolo - Adriano - 0

BRAZIL

Striker Adriano (pictured) scored two goals, though one appeared to be with his hand, to set Sao Paulo on their way to a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Palmeiras.

On loan from Italy's Internazionale, Adriano's goals for the Brazilian champions ended Palmeiras's 10-match winning streak.

Sao Paulo went ahead in the 11th minute of the Paulista championship semi-final, first leg with one of the most controversial goals of the season.

Jorge Wagner crossed from the left, Adriano dived to meet the ball and television replays showed that it hit his outstretched hand and flew into the net.

There were no arguments about his second goal in the 47th minute as Adriano powered clear of the Palmeiras defence and fired the ball past goalkeeper Marcos for his 11th goal of the championship.

Ponte Preta beat Guaratingueta 1-0 in the other tie.

Cruzeiro squandered a 4-1 lead as they were held 4-4 by Ituiutaba in their Minas Gerais championship semi-final first leg while Atletico Mineiro beat Tupi 3-2 in the other tie.

An injury-time goal from Alex gave 10-man Internacional a 1-0 win at Caxias in the Gaucho championship semi-finals after they had Marcao sent off in the first half.

In Rio de Janeiro's Carioca championship, which uses a different format, Botafogo and Fluminense reached the final of the second stage.

Botafogo beat Flamengo 3-0 while Fluminense beat Botafogo 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the two one-off semi-finals.

ARGENTINA

River Plate beat Tigre 1-0 in a near deserted Monumental stadium to stay top of the Argentine championship.

River were barred from selling tickets for the game, except to club members occupying the most expensive seats, following crowd violence at a match against Arsenal two weeks ago.

Colombian striker Radamel Falcao Garcia headed the winner from a Matias Abelairas cross five minutes after halftime.

River had midfielder Oscar Ahumado sent off for a second bookable offence in the 55th minute and the visitors had Santiago Morello dismissed five minutes later.

Boca Juniors and Estudiantes both won to stay four points behind Simeone's team, who have 24 points from 10 games and are still unbeaten.

Jesus Datolo scored both goals to give Boca a 2-1 win at Gimnasia-Jujuy, who pulled one back through Luis Escalada late in the game.

Estudiantes beat Lanus 1-0 on Friday with a goal by Juan Sebastian Veron.

Racing Club celebrated Juan Manuel Llop's debut as coach by winning for the first time, a spectacular free kick from Franco Sosa giving them a 1-0 win over Arsenal.

USA

David Beckham suffered a frustrating afternoon as the Los Angeles Galaxy slumped to a 3-2 home defeat against Major League Soccer strugglers Toronto FC.

The England midfielder was unable to prevent his team from dropping their first home points of the season, despite twice fighting back from a goal behind.

Beckham played all 90 minutes and helped to win the 57th minute penalty that Landon Donovan converted for the Galaxy's second equaliser, when his attempted cross was handled by Toronto's Carl Robinson.

Earlier, Danny Dichio put the Canadian side ahead on 42 minutes, only for Donovan to level the scores a minute later. Jarrod Smith got Toronto back into the lead after 53 minutes and Jeff Cunningham secured the points with a breakaway goal with three minutes left.

PORTUGAL

Sporting beat strugglers Leixoes 2-0 to move up to third in the Portuguese Premier League.

Sporting, down to 10 men for the last 20 minutes after a red card for Brazilian defender Ronny, opened the scoring when defender Tonel headed home a corner after 52 minutes.

The Lisbon side, who meet city rivals Benfica on Wednesday in the semi-finals of Portuguese Cup, doubled the lead when Brazilian striker Liedson notched his 10th goal of the season with a header from another corner after 59 minutes.

Porto, already champions, won 2-1 at Vitoria Setubal on Saturday to top the standings with 66 points with four matches remaining. In-form Vitoria Guimaraes, who beat Boavista 1-0 on Saturday, are second on 48.

NETHERLANDS

PSV Eindhoven were made to wait for the Dutch championship when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Twente Enschede.

Second-placed Ajax Amsterdam's match at Groningen was postponed after paper thrown on to the pitch by the home crowd caught fire and caused an evacuation of part of the stands. The match will now be played on Wednesday.

Ajax are six points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven. If the Amsterdam side failed to beat Groningen, PSV would clinch their fourth successive league title.

GREECE

Olympiacos moved closer to an 11th league title in 12 years after midfielder Predrag Djordjevic struck a 14-minute hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Xanthi.

With one match left to play, Olympiakos stay top of the table on 67 points, two more than AEK Athens who were 4-0 winners over PAOK Salonika in Thessaloniki. Panathinaikos are third on 63 points but are out of the title race.

Because of their inferior head-to-head record against AEK, Olympiakos must still win their final game at home to Iraklis next week to be sure of the title.

At the bottom of the table, Veria and Apollon Kalamarias were relegated after failing to win. The final relegation spot will go to one of Ergotelis, Atromitos Athinon or Levadiakos.

ISRAEL

A pitch invasion by their own fans four minutes from time denied Beitar Jerusalem the near certainty of retaining their Israeli league title on Sunday.

Leading 1-0 against Maccabi Herzliya, home fans spilled onto the pitch for an early celebration of back-to-back titles -- forcing referee Alon Yeffet to abandon the match.

Victory would have given big-spending Beitar a 15-point lead over their nearest rivals with five matches left to play. Instead, they now risk sanctions from Israel's Football Association.

The IFA issued a statement saying the incidents meant an automatic disciplinary hearing for Beitar.

RUSSIA

Surprise leaders Rubin Kazan stretched their perfect start to five matches after a brace by Turkey striker Gokdeniz Karadeniz helped them to a 4-0 away rout of Khimkhi.

Dynamo Moscow stayed second, two points behind the leaders, after Bulgarian Tsvetan Genkov and strike partner Dani scored two goals apiece in a 4-3 home win over city rivals Spartak.

Champions Zenit St Peterbsurg remained in the bottom half of the table following a 1-1 home draw with Krylya Sovietov Samara that left them nine points off the pace.

UKRAINE

Champions and leaders Dynamo Kiev strolled to a 3-0 home win over Tavriya Simferopol to stay two points ahead of traditional rivals Shakhtar Donetsk, who kept up the pressure with a 3-1 victory at fourth-placed Dnipro.

Dynamo, who have played a game more than Shakhtar, were 2-0 up after just six minutes before Romanian midfielder Tiberiu Ghioane sealed the win shortly before the hour.

Evaverson Brandao fired Shakhtar ahead while Razvan Rat and Luiz Adriano struck either side of the break after Serhiy Nazarenko's equaliser.

POLAND

Wisla Krakow are one point away from winning their 11th league title after a 2-1 win at promoted Jagiellonia left them 15 points clear at the top of the table with five games to go.

International striker Radoslaw Matusiak and midfielder Marek Zienczuk gave Wisla a 2-0 lead on the hour to stretch their unbeaten run to 25 matches.

Groclin Grodzisk kept alive a theoretical chance of denying Wisla their fourth league title in six years with a 2-0 home win over champions Zaglebie Lubin.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Champions Sparta Prague and city rivals Slavia both ground out 1-0 wins to remain level on points and continue their close title race with five matches remaining.

Midfielder Daniel Kolar kept Sparta in the driving seat on goal difference after scoring a 73rd minute winner at Kladno, while Zdenek Senkerik struck in Slavia's home defeat of 2006 champions Slovan Liberec.

HUNGARY

A Balasz Nikolov goal handed third-placed Gyori ETO a 1-0 home win over leaders MTK Budapest and threw the title race wide open as other teams in the chasing pack also won.

Second-placed Ujpest, 3-2 winners at Tatabanya, and Gyori are a point behind MTK while champions Debrecen in fourth are a further two points adrift after a 3-0 success at Vasas Budapest.

ROMANIA

CFR Cluj beat Rapid Bucharest 1-0 thanks to a Diego Ruiz header to go top of the standings, a point ahead of champions Steaua Bucharest, who play Universitatea Cluj at home on Monday.
