Championship - Round-up: Wolves on the brink

Eurosport - Tue, 14 Apr 08:15:00 2009

Wolves moved to the brink of automatic promotion from the Championship with a dramatic 3-2 victory at Derby.

FOOTBALL Andy Keogh of Wolves scores against Derby Championship 2009 - 0

Andy Keogh scored his second goal of the game with three minutes remaining to give the league leaders victory after they had trailed 2-1.

Mick McCarthy's side took the lead in the seventh minute when Keogh rifled a brilliant volley past Stephen Bywater, but the Rams equalised on the half hour with a curling free-kick from Przemyslaw Kazmierczak and took the lead 10 minutes into the second half through Mile Sterjovski.

Wolves were far from finished though and Matt Jarvis tucked away an equaliser with 15 minutes remaining before Keogh's late winner.

The result puts them six points clear of second-placed Birmingham , who endured a torrid afternoon in a 1-1 draw at St Andrews against Plymouth.

Goalkeeper Maik Taylor was controversially dismissed after 23 minutes and Paul Gallagher converted the resulting penalty, but Birmingham showed grit to come back, substitute Franck Queudrue levelling with a header five minutes after the break.

Sheffield United missed the chance to take advantage and stay a point behind the Blues in third after drawing 0-0 at home to Nottingham Forest, who were reduced to 10 men after just 16 minutes when Kelvin Wilson was sent off for a head-butt.

Cardiff closed the gap on the Blades in fourth, Jay Bothroyd and a Ross McCormack brace sealing a 3-1 win over Burnley, who remain in the final play-off spot.

Reading occupy the other play-off place in fifth after throwing away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Blackpool.

The Royals went ahead in the 10th minute through Noel Hunt and doubled their lead 15 minutes later, Jem Karacan netting his first for the club.

But Keith Southern made it 2-1 on the half hour and DJ Campbell equalised for Blackpool midway through the second half.

Seventh-placed Swansea kept their play-off hopes alive with a 3-1 victory at Barnsley, Ashley Williams getting on the end of a free-kick after two minutes, Jordi Gomez doubling the lead before the break and top-scorer Jason Scotland capping the win in the second half. Daniel Bogdanovic netted a late consolation from the spot for the Tykes.

And Preston are also in the running for a top-six place after notching a 2-0 win at Doncaster, Chris Brown and Neil Mellor with a goal in each half.

At the bottom, Norwich moved out of the bottom three with a 2-0 win over Watford thanks to a spectacular own goal from Danny Rose, who curled the ball over his own keeper, and a late second from Gary Doherty.

Southampton are still in the drop zone but also secured three vital points, David McGoldrick's 25-yard winner giving them a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

And rock-bottom Charlton need a mathematical miracle to prevent their relegation to League One after a goaless draw at Coventry.

Elsewhere, QPR came back from two down to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 while Bristol City and Ipswich drew 1-1 at Ashton Gate.

  1. ostrichfarmer has got his head in the sand... the blades can't even beat a 10 man forest... the Wolves deserve to go up, we've earned it (or will have on saturday, fingers crossed) and the Premiership will look a lot prettier with the old gold and black. do you want to see a young team with potential climbing the premiership or a bunch of old donkeys from St Andrews or Bramall Lane fighting relegation?
and yes Ranaldo epitomises the worst of the premiership. diving, shirt pulling, whining and too much pouting.

  2. #23, not jealous. take your point, Can't understand why so called experts keep refering to the premiership as british/english football! - infact - none of the divisions, 1, 2 3 or 4 are (in my opinion!) as good as they used to be (I started watching Wolves in the 70's when I was old enough to understand) - Today it seems to be that if you have the money you will win (except man city!).
Sorry but 100K a week, and they winge when they get a bit of abuse from the FANS who may not earn 40K a YEAR!!!!

  3. I am a Royals fan, but I wish wolves well in the Premiership, I am glad that Mick McCarhy has been in charge after the dirty deal he had from Ireland selectors. I know that maybe I am jumping the gun but I think that Wolves will be the Championship winners, Good luck to them, they have been trying hard to get there for years and finally they seem to have succeeded. I just wish that Reading were going up with them but they have squandered the chance, I don't think that they will even be in the play off, the way they are going. I am feeling very sad that they have let their supporters down so badly. I am still a Reading fan, have been all my life, which is 71 years now, and I will be until the day I die, but I can still appreciate other teams doing well.Maybe one day Reading will do it again. And they may get in the play off's and still do it, but my hopes are slowly dying. But I will keep hoping and keep my fingers crossed that they will get there again.

  4. @19: You obviously know very little of the history of Man Utd, probably because you're too young to know much at all. Whilst Wolves used to be successful, it was United in fact that were the yoyo club going down to the (as was then) second division and back up to the first division. The problem with half of you lot is that you think football started when the Premiership started.

@20: You don't have to be overpaid and from Portugal to be a poof, as you so eloquently prove... What's wrong, jealous that your mediocre life amounts to nothing compared with successful footballers?...Bboo hoo!

  6. I remember John Richards and Derek Doogan doing great things on a weekly basis and probably for peanuts compared to today's wages.Football was in black and white in those days but somehow is seemed better then!

  7. Wolves in the 1950's were better tahn anybody in the world - only they did it with British people - not overpaid poofs from portugal!

  8. sappercommando25 - what a naive comment. You're probably a Man Utd fan or something, not knowing the emotional rollercoaster of promotions and relegations.

As a Palace fan we get plenty of those. It's the best experience going through a season and winning promotion to the best league in the world. And the most heart wrenching thing being relegated from it.

But don't worry, I'm sure you'll still enjoy your prawn sandwiches and knowing that you'll still be in the premier league next year.

All we need now is the board to spend some cash and keep us there.
    Up the wolves!

Wolverhampton Wonders are another of those yo yo clubs. One minute they are in the Premiership and the next, they are gone.
Wouldn't it be better they stayed in the Championship rather than incur the costs of the constant relegation (and the humiliation)?
Like Birmingham City, Sheffield United and Reading, they just lack what it really takes to STAY in the top tier.

  15. Mr Ostrich Farmer - The season begins in August and ends shortly - the rewards go to the team(s) who gain the most points having played 46 matches - or have things changed since I last looked? Wolves will be worthy champions should they gain the last few points they require - Against Sheff Utd the results were 3-1 and 1-1, perhaps you need to reconsider your point of view?
