American Vania King produced a first round upset at WTA Charleston event by knocking out 14th seed Olga Govortsova 6-7(3) 7-6(5) 6-3.
The 20-year-old King, ranked 121st in the world, mounted a spirited fight-back after trailing Belarusian Govortsova 5-3 in the second set, and then took charge in the third.
China's Peng Shuai advanced to the second round with a comfortable 6-0 6-2 win over Russia's Anastasia Pivovarova.
Peng, the 10th seed, will face the winner of the tie between Uzbekistan's Akgul Amanmuradova and American Alexandra Stevenson.
France's Virginie Razzano, the 13th seed, also cruised to a straight sets 6-1 6-2 victory over American Mallory Cecil, while 11th seed Alona ondarenko of Ukraine disposed of Luxembourg's Anne Kremer 6-4 6-0.
Top seed and world number three Elena Dementieva of Russia enjoyed a first-round bye and will take on Julie Ditty in round two, after the American beat Japan's Ayumi Morita 6-1 6-1.
Second seed Venus Williams is drawn to play either India's Sania Mirza or Sesil Karatantcheva of Kazakhstan after their first round clash.
