Davey desperate for skipper to stay

Wed 14 May, 02:00 PM

Barnsley manager Simon Davey "would love" to keep Brian Howard and has confirmed the club have received no offers for their skipper. The 25-year-old has attracted interest from the Premier League after an impressive season at Oakwell, scoring 14 goals including the winner in the memorable 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield in the FA Cup fifth round.

Howard was also named in the Championship team of the season but Davey is desperate for the player to still be with the club when the new campaign kicks off on August 9.

He told Barnsley World: "Everybody is talking about him going here, there and everywhere and Brian is an ambitious player but we have not had any formal enquiries.

"I read things in the paper week in, week out he is going here and there and it is becoming laughable. Until a manager phones me and tells me he is offering x amount for Brian Howard we will not discuss it.

"You always want to keep your best players and to have a midfielder who has chipped in with 14 goals means I would be stupid if I said I wanted Brian to move on."
