Harrison Licence Bid Fails

Wed 14 May, 05:09 PM

Former WBO featherweight champion Scott Harrison has failed to regain his boxing licence.

The British Boxing Board of Control today announced it had continued his suspension until the end of January after Harrison appeared before a tribunal in Cardiff.

The Scot had his licence revoked after being found guilty of "bringing the sport into disrepute".

Harrison last fought in November 2005 when he retained his WBO belt against Nedal Hussein.

The Cambuslang boxer lost his licence in December 2006 after failing to make the weight for a fight against Nicky Cook, the second defence he had cancelled. The 30-year-old resigned as WBO champion in the same month.

He launched a comeback attempt towards the end of last year, vowing to win a world super-featherweight title by July 2008, and aimed to get back in the ring in January.

However, regaining his licence was no formality and he accused the boxing board of conducting a "witch hunt" against him.

Harrison was then arrested in Lanarkshire on April 22 on suspicion of drink-driving.

He has now been told his licence is suspended until January 31, 2009, after attending a hearing yesterday.

A representative for Harrison said the boxer was unlikely to appeal against the decision but had not ruled it out.

He also stressed that the boxer had not been stripped of his world title. Correspondence from the WBO confirmed Harrison had resigned as champion on December 6, 2006.
