Premier League - Fergie: I want to keep Tevez

Eurosport - Thu, 14 May 12:29:00 2009

Sir Alex Ferguson insisted he wants Carlos Tevez to stay at Old Trafford after the Argentinian scored in Manchester United's 2-1 win at Wigan.

2008-2009 Wigan-Manchester United Carlos Tevez celebrates scoring the equalising goal - 0

Tevez equalised with an impudent back-heel after Hugo Rodallega had given the Latics a first-half lead before Michael Carrick scored an 86th-minute winner to leave United only a point away from retaining their Premier League title.

Tevez's future has been in the spotlight over the past few days, with the former West Ham player quoted in a Sunday newspaper saying he does not expect to stay at the champions.

However, following the victory at the JJB Stadium, Ferguson told Sky: "He is a fantastic player.

"He knows I want him to stay. I had a chat with him today and (chief executive) David Gill has had meetings with him.

"I'm sorry I have to keep on going on about this, it has never changed. (The fact) we're not negotiating with a football club is the problem - we'll see."

In fact, United are dealing with Joorabchian, who was allowed to keep Tevez's registration at the start of a two-year loan period but must now relinquish it if the South American is to remain in the Premier League.

"It is true David Gill came to see Mr Joorabchian and they had a cordial meeting," said Joorabchian's spokesman. It is categorically untrue that Manchester United made an offer to try to persuade Carlos Tevez to stay at the club.

"In 2007 Manchester United agreed a two-year loan deal for Carlos Tevez and at the same time agreed the terms that would make the transfer permanent. They have not taken up that option."

Carrick paid tribute to Wigan following his late strike, saying: ''It (my goal) was worth the wait.

''To score goals as important as that is a great feeling - I had to make up for the miss in the first half, it's a great feeling.

''Wigan came at us and caused a few problems.

''It's not the first time we have come from behind - we did it the hard way.''

Wigan manager Steve Bruce was left disappointed by the result but was still impressed that his side almost managed to overcome the Premier League leaders.

Wigan have failed to beat any of English football's recognised 'big four' in any of the 32 encounters they have played against them since their promotion to the top-flight four years ago.

Bruce said: "I am hugely disappointed for the players because I thought they deserved something out of the game.

"But, we knew that we could not have kept the energy levels up and you have to against United.

"My players have shown everybody the honesty and integrity of the Premier League and what it is about."

  10. both tevez and fergie want him to stay and they had an agreement, but joorbachen is the problem he's decided he wants more money for him and utd rightly wont be held to ransom over it. if tevez really wants to stay at utd he'll make the deal go ahead, if not then he'll be going abroad next season. and as for liverpool, don't be so daft, why would he settle for second when he can play for utd. liverpool are and have always been just chancers who got lucky. ok. they have three top quality players in gerrard, torres, and carrager, but thats it. the rest are average at best and if those three are all injured then liverpool are just another mid table team, they have no depth to there squad, utd on the other hand have quality in every area of the pitch, so get a bit of common sense will you

  19. Why is Tevez on loan from West Ham - why isn't he playing for West Ham? Did they make some kind of match-fixing deal with Man U to escape relegation?
