Merrick thrilled with Blues gesture

Birmingham legend Gil Merrick has revealed his joy at having the Railway Stand named after him.

The former goalkeeper becomes the first Blues player to have a stand at St Andrew`s renamed in his honour after it was revealed it would become `the Gil Merrick Stand` in time for the new season.

He told the club`s official website: "I am very proud, I never expected it and it was a wonderful surprise.

"It is marvellous for me and my family. I feel very humble and it`s a wonderful gesture from the club."

Meanwhile, Blues have offered 18-year-old centre-back David Joyce a six-month professional contract.

  1. Gil Merrick was a superb goalkeeper in his day, maybe the best, but never let us forget the likes of Jeff Hall, Ken Green, Len Boyd, Trevor Smith, Roy Warhurst, Gordon Astle, Peter Murphy, Eddie Brown, Noel Kinsey and the great Alex Govan. They are without down the best team ever to turn out for the Blues.
