ATP Tour - Injured Murray out of Queen's Club

TENNIS Andy Murray Queen's 2008 - 0

Murray, who suffered injuries to his groin, neck, and thumb during his come from behind 5-7 6-1 6-4 victory over Latvian teenager Ernests Gulbis, was due to face the former world number one Roddick in Friday's second match on centre court.

"I woke up this morning and couldn't pick up my pillow, I was struggling to pick up my phone," the 21-year-old said. "I took another anti-inflammatory, came down here and tried to practice, hit some balls.

"I could hit the ball decent but I couldn't hit a backhand volley and slicing was very sore. I had a scan and I haven't pulled anything, just sprained it a bit. It's obviously not terrible but it's just too sore to try and play a match.

"It (the scan) was just a check to see if there's anything broken, anything too drastic that you're going to make a big problem by playing on it, but there's nothing like that. That's the one positive thing that I can take away from it, that it's going to clear up hopefully in a few days.

"The reason I was considering playing is because I was in a tournament. If it was a practice week, I would have taken three, four days off. I just have to take it day to day, see how the swelling and bruising goes down. Hopefully in three or four days' time, I'll be able to hit some balls again.

The 21-year-old Scot missed the entire grass court season last year, including Wimbledon, after suffering a wrist fracture at the clay court Masters event in Hamburg.

He slipped multiple times during his rain interrupted third round encounter with Gulbis and suffered the thumb injury during the first set, but believes he should be fit for Wimbledon.

"I wasn't going to damage it any further by playing, I was just going to prolong the time that it was going to be painful for. If I played today I still think I would have been okay to play Wimbledon," he said.

"There's no point going on the court feeling 50%, not being able to hit a few of the shots. I'm not pulling out just because Wimbledon's around the corner. I just didn't see any point in trying to play when you're so far away from 100% fit."

Murray is scheduled to play at an exhibition event at Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire next week in his final warm-up event prior to the All England Club.

"I played on grass a lot in the past and played three competitive matches here (two in the doubles)," said Murray. "I'll play a match at the Boodles thing next week as well.

"I'll try and get as much match practice in as possible next week and I don't think it will be a problem for Wimbledon."

  2. so Murray is out of Queens..so why keep telling us? Delete the story from the Tennis "News" and let him go home and soak his sore thumb, duh? Tired of opening Eurosport and seeing old stories about Andy's loss while reading of the blast between Nadal and the other Andy. What a dream match, huh? Can't wait for Federer, Nadal, Djojovic, and Roddick in Wimbledon. Can watch it all on TV and won't have to see Murray's face center-stage to learn what's happening on the courts....Pity modern technology cannot cure the stupidity of tennis press people behind the news...including Eurosport editors..

  3. uk and ireland yahoo sport is so @#$%. The tennis results don't veen show what round the matches are. In the football euro championships they don't even show the points tables. In the golf the leaderboard is invariably 5 hours behind. Come on guys, we need simple tables and reulsts lists to get a perpective on what's going on. Employ somebody who understands the sports a little better.

  8. A dour, uncharismatic, ectomorphic nearly-man (Tim Henman)has been replaced by a truculent, uncharismatic, ectomorphic nearly-man (Andy Murray). Its no real problem as I like to watch the really good players at Wimbledon. The pity is we've all got years to look forward to of Sue Barker discussing Andy's chances and reasons for failure. How many years depends on who retires first.

  10. Yesterday during the match, a commentator told us how andy is a dramatist.
You can tell a champion by the way he carries himself hence it's no surprise that he hasn't made any inroads with regards winning because he has got this sick mentality and likes looking for cheap excuses all the time.
He is equally part of the problem faced by British tennis.
There are times when you fail to differentiate between andy the man and ANDY THE CHILD.
Even if he were to skip 4 wimbledons in a row, few folks would miss him.

  11. why the hell would he run scared?
