Stuart Appleby leads the US Open after a thrilling second round at Torrey Pines, which ebbed and flowed with unrelenting drama before captivated galleries in San Diego.
The 37-year-old Australian shot a one-under-par 70, complete with four birdies and three bogeys, to post a two-round total of 139 and carry a slim one shot lead into the weekend.
Leading the chasing pack is world number one Tiger Woods, who lit up the course with five birdies on the back nine in a scintillating display to stand alongside his best.
Woods was visibly distressed after aggravating his left knee midway through his round, but drew on his fierce competitiveness to make four birdies in the five subsequent holes and put himself right back in contention to win a 14th Major.
Joining him in a three-way tie for second place are Rocco Mediate and Sweden's Robert Karllson - who scored a second successive 70 and played fluently throughout.
England's Lee Westwood also had a good day at the office, carding a level-par 71 to join a group of players tied for third at one under.
Luke Donald, Ernie Els, Geoff Ogilvy and Robert Allenby are all within touching distance of the leaders at level par for the championship.
Comeback of the day went to Padraig Harrington, who carded a stunning 67 to get back to three over and just six shots shy of the lead.

it really is tigers weekend and i hope the knee holds out .go tiger
Tiger needs to be praised. He has done great things. Despite the pains in his knee he is still fighting to finish first. Without him Golf is no fun.
Tiger is a hero....like it or not.
May I remind all of those who get so excited over those leading after the first or second round that golf is played over 72 holes, and as it happens so frequently, when they are falling away for whatever reason, the Tiger invariably comes to the top - like cream.
tiger for sure... got talent...
Ps Cmon u Brits & Europeans
Yeah Tiger at 85% is usually better than the rest at full pelt ...
The Tiger is sure to make a fantastic recovery; trust him.
