World Twenty20 - Gul inspires Pakistan to vital win

Eurosport - Sun, 14 Jun 10:38:00 2009

Pace bowler Umar Gul captured a record five wickets for six runs to propel Pakistan to an overwhelming six wicket victory over New Zealand in their World Twenty20 clash at the Oval.

CRICKET 2009 World Twenty20 Pakistan's Umar Gul, center, celebrates after he claims the wicket of New Zealand's Nathan McCullum - 0

Gul recorded the best figures in the format's short international history by taking five wickets for just six runs as Pakistan bowled out New Zealand for just 99 before romping to a six-wicket victory at the Oval.

Needing a win to stay in the tournament, Pakistan surpassed their modest target in 13.1 overs for the loss of four wickets to come back strongly after losing their opening Super Eights match to Sri Lanka by 19 runs on Friday.

Teenager Shahzaib Hasan hit four boundaries and two sixes in his maiden international match before he was run out for 35 off 28 balls.

Pakistan lost three wickets in eight balls to slip from 61-1 to 71-4, but Shahid Afridi lifted his team home with 29 not out.

Gul, brought on as the sixth bowler, claimed four of the last five wickets to leave Pakistan chasing a modest target of 5.5 runs an over.

"It is important for me, the team and my country to perform well," said Gul.

"In Twenty20, you have to be able to bowl the yorker, bouncer and the slower ball. Now I want to be the highest wicket-taker in the tournament."

Scott Styris' 22 was New Zealand's top score on the easy-paced wicket as eight batsmen failed to reach double figures.

  1. Excellent result! Great to see Razzaq back!
Please move Shahid Afridi up the order permanently. Have you noticed he always does much better if batting early on without the pressure of coming in at situations where 12+ an over are required? He's a natural attacker - a pure maverick - and knows nothing else. When he fires there are few better in the world than him. He'll either get the team off to a flying start, or get out quickly - either way he doesn't waste balls, and the rest of the team know what tpace they need to go at. Much better than the top order creating pressure and expecting him to perform miracles. Whatever happens he's an asset to the side, either with bat, ball or when fielding.
As for the other wanna-be maverick's in the side - one is enough, just stick to sensibly paced batting please and Pakistan have got a real chance!

  3. The weird thing about michelle is that she has gone out of her way to make her illuminating comments on this page ? What on earth is that that about? The population of the cricketing nations is getting on for 2 billion ,according to a quick google . It would appear that michelle is a bit dim, even for an American .
Well done pakistan . U should make the semi-finals at least.

  5. Interesting thoughts from you on the state of a truly English/Global sport (cricket). Perhaps look closer to home where in America sports such as American Football and Baseball, if you win these league tournaments in America you declare yourself World Champions!!! How does that work, you only played teams in your own country.
However I totally accept that no other teams in the world could defeat you in either of the sports above, it does show the arrogance of the American Nation, if Lancashire win the Cricket pro40 this year are they then World Champions???

I'm a proud English woman..you do NOT speak for me, I'm proud of our liberties and our freedom of speech, but for you to make such an insulting and degrading remark about a proud nation is both disgraceful and unforgivable.
Don't forget that that while you are living in England, you are an ambassador for your country.
We welcome everyone one to this wonderful country...except closed minded and bigoted people like you...a typical unenlightened and ignorant American....did you ever wonder why you are the most hated country in the world?

  7. If Gul, Affridi, Raazaq and Kamran Akmal can give a spark to their team consistently, Pakistan will sure win the championship this tournament!

Go on, do us a favour.....
