Walter Smith has confirmed that Rangers simply could not match Danny Shittu's wage demands - but insisted the wages on offer were good enough.Smith abandoned plans to sign the Nigeria international on Sunday despite having a bid, believed to be £1.5million, accepted by the Championship club.
Rangers spoke to the player but could not agree personal terms.
"We have not accepted his demands, so it looks like that is it because it has been going on for a wee while now," said Smith in the Daily Record.
"It has nothing to do with a gulf in wages between the Championship and the SPL, it was just a situation where he wanted more than we were prepared to pay."

Why should a club, any club, give in to a players unreasonable demands? Clubs need to have players who want to play for the club, who will give their all and more ... not players who simply look at how much is being paid into their bank each week. Yes, you can BUY a player, but you cannot buy their loyalty - this has been proven time and again.
I don't know what he was being offered, but I can guarantee you it would have been weekly many times what most Rangers fans will earn in a year. As far as I am concerned these greedy, bloodsucking ball-kickers should be kicked into reality.
Well done Walter for not bending to a players demands. One player does not make a team, and believe you me when he got tired of Glasgow, Rangers would still have been shelling out a fortune for a player who wanted to move away for more money. Greed has no place in Scottish football, all it will do is destroy the game.
Walter Smith should know good things doesn't come cheap. Is it because Shittu is an African, can he compare Shittu to Christain Daily or that used article from Everton.Shittu's perfomance at the last cup of nations speaks well ahead of him.If Smith wants a good player he should know he has to pay a good wage.
