Tigers cruise to friendly victory

Mon 14 Jul, 10:00 PM

Hull stepped up their preparations for their first Premier League season with a 4-0 win over local amateurs North Ferriby on Monday night. The Championship play-off winners were barely extended in their traditional pre-season opener, strolling to victory at the Unibond League side's Church Road home.

Dean Marney and Will Atkinson were on target in the first half, with Michael Turner and Nick Barmby netting later on.

Manager Phil Brown took the opportunity to look at 23 players in the low-key, 70 minute contest, completely changing the team at half-time.

Brazilian Geovanni, signed on a free transfer from Manchester City, featured from the start but fellow new recruit Bernard Mendy was left out.

Hull should have opened the scoring after just three minutes when Craig Fagan, now on a permanent deal after a loan move from Derby last season, set up Atkinson but the striker scuffed his shot.

Marney struck two minutes later when play-off hero Dean Windass and former Barcelona forward Geovanni connected to put him through on goal.

Windass then squared for Atkinson to score the second from a Marney long ball.

Full-back Ryan France also hit the bar after his fierce 40-yard shot was palmed up by goalkeeper Steve Wilson.

Turner added the third 15 minutes after the break, stroking home after North Ferriby failed to clear a corner.

Caleb Folan should have added a fourth after being put through on goal six minutes from time but sliced his shot wide.

Former Liverpool and England midfielder Barmby wrapped up the scoring with a late bullet header.
