Cannavaro: Ron Must Respect Deal

Mon 14 Jul, 10:09 AM

Fabio Cannavaro has dismissed Sepp Blatter's slavery comments and says Cristiano Ronaldo "must respect" his Manchester United contract.

Last week, FIFA president Blatter voiced his controversial comments on 'modern slavery' in football.

Speaking of United winger Ronaldo's future, amid public interest from Real Madrid, Blatter said that no player should be held against his will.

Real defender Cannavaro, though, feels players should honour their deals - with Ronaldo's current contract due to expire in 2012.

"Slavery is a big word," the Italian centre-back told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Someone who signs a contract must respect it."

On Sunday, it was announced that Ronaldo is facing at least three months on the sidelines following ankle surgery.

The 23-year-old's future at Old Trafford still remains uncertain, with the Portugal international yet to confirm where he intends to play his football next season.

  2. Im so glad that comment that Cannavaro made came from a Madrid player.Finall someone with sence thought it i the right think for Cristiano Ronalo to honor his contract to United.United and most important Sir Alex Ferguson made Cristino into the great player he his.Not saying he wasn't good before( remember United players did plea with Fergie to get Cristiano because hey were afraid of him, and he should realise that he owe a lot to them for guiding him).i don't think he his a slave "FIFA president Sepp Blatter", i think he extended his contract 1 or 2 seasons ago. That's too soon for him to just ditch United for 100 or 80 million.United made him into that 100 million player that he his, and he owes them at least this much to honor his contract. And i respect Cannavaro for saying the right thing. And to all United haters leave the boy alone,he is in a deep situation whether you want to beleive it or not.Remember he his the one playing not you, and it is not easy for to him to choose whether to stay to his home(MANCHESTER UNITED) o go to his DREAM CLUB REAL MADRID.If he goes to Madrid will just see what happens, and if he stays we'll se if the crowd will like him. And by the way which # would he wear.GOD BLESS.# 7 ALL THE WAY.

  4. I agree that Ronaldo doesn't have to come out to state where he wants to play next season. He has many times in the past stated that he wanted to stay at Man U and it achieved no more than to kill the Madrid rumours for a couple of days.

Some of his more recent statements have been more vague but he has been left stranded in the middle of this to some extent. He wants to join RM at some point, or at least have the option to, so cannot afford to cause them any offense even now. They may also be putting now or never pressure on him leaving him genuinely, and understandably, confused as to what to do. Or, he may realise that the figures being talked about might eventually prove too much to refuse for Utd and that he just has to accept his fate.

As for the slave comments, the villain of the piece was Blatter - yes, Ronaldo 'agreed' but as we've not seen how the question put to him was phrased, a simple 'I agree' is rather too little to crucify him. And, if he does fear that Man Utd are going to cash in, his 'slave' empathy may even be down to a suspicion that he is about to be sold against his will.

However, if he does stay, then there is no doubt that some explanation must be forthcoming to appease those fans who have allowed themselves to become riled by media speculation and conjecture rather than reserve judgement until the facts are known.

  5. From a better red(lfc) supporter, I actually do hope man.u make a stand against real as we have been on the receiving end too (mcmanaman, owen). Why these so called slaves(sic) want to jump ship to the 2nd best league is beyond me-except possibly 4 an easy life, big wedge and no tough demands! Lets face it english teams walked the champions league and that will be the same for years to come. By the way, who is that tw*t blatter anyway, and lap dog platini isnt much better-sad jealous and anti english!

  6. Ronaldo doesn't have to say where he is playing next season...after all he signed a contract last season to stay at old trafford till at least 2012...so why would he have to explain where he is playing next season...as far as the contract goes he has already stated where he will be playing the next four years at least....anyway...i'm sick of hearing about it.

  7. True comments, a contract should be honoured by all, unless both parties reach an agreement to terminate it early. Some people who have made comments on this ugly saga, including Mr Blatter show a total lack of principals or honour. As for Mr. Blatter's "slave" comments, well did anyone hold a gun to his head to amke him sign to become very well paid? I would say NO. Was he ill advised as to what was in the contract he was signing, I would asume his manager and lawyers etc would have all gone over it with a fine tooth comb to make sure there were no hidden traps. Was it just a case of Real Madrid offering more in his weekly pay packet? But then Ronaldo hasd not had the guts to come clean and declare his hand and say where he wants to play, he is just sitting on the fence, not saying anything solid. Is that in case he stays at Man U he has not upset too many people, so much is said to be hear say or comments he "made to a friend." Plus Real keep the pot bubbling with several press statements about him, allegedly coming to Madrid. I still can not see how this can not be seen as encouraging a player to break his contract. But then FIFA show little interest, plus the comments made by Blatter make one think he has an interest in getting Ronaldo to Madrid.

  10. Great comment, Cannavaro, absolutely right. I prefer if Ronaldo would leave England, but agree with what Cannavaro says in principle - the question is, are Ronaldo and Blatter men of principle?!

  11. This Ronaldo saga highlights the need to scrap contracts and pay them on performance, because they're not worth the paper they are written on. In such a scenario if a player wants to leave or the club thinks he is surplus to requirement, then they both get nothing when they decide the time is up to leave. I would like to know if Ronaldo discussed his intentions with anyone, or this is just media driven as always.

  14. A contract protects both player AND CLUB..when a player is maltreated thats comes under the scope of SLAVERY bla bla bla..the club guarantees the player his wages and demands on condition that he fulfills his terms and duties with the club..when he signed it he must put some thought into it because it is also a form of promise to the club..not go around ranting like a baby without his rattle..after all the club is fulfilling their end of the deal..and if has a reason to get angry..keep it to himself..blatter is like some communist/dictator/dinosaur up there..he always has a reason to make FIFA a runaway of the law or cook up some controversial rules that upsets everyone..for example..the laws that prohibit decisions based on camera footage and things like limiting foreign player to 4 or some rubbish offside rule..he's a plain sucker..his statements are pure rubbish..he should go get a mental checkup or something

  17. Player's sign a contract giving a commitment to their club in return for a healthy salary. A salary paid for by the fans! If their game improves then they negotiate an improvement to their contract (well an agent does!)

This contract is the club's commitment to the player. Where then is the commitment from the player back? If someone doesn't take a stance, players will continue to renege on their written commitments taking their wages ever higher, forcing fans to dig even deeper. It's about time these player realise who their paymasters really are and that their contued greed is only going to destroy the game!

Yes, make a good living, but don't forget the rest. Honour lost is hard to regain. Then will the money be really worth it?

    - xxxx's take when Andy Webster broke his contract with Hearts to play for Wigan.

Now here's a quiz... Can anyone tell me who quoted that?? Just fill in the bl***y blank!
