Anichebe, 20, is also eligible to play for England but has expressed a desire to represent the country of his birth.

All previous attempts by the Super Eagles to call-up the 20-year-old have resulted in failure, with the player withdrawing due to fitness problems.

Osaze Odemwingie of Lokomotiv Moscow was also included in a 26-strong provisional squad for the Beijing Games next month.

Olympique Marseille defender Taye Taiwo and forward Obinna Nsofor of Chievo Verona were also named.

The squad will leave Nigeria on Tuesday for a training camp in Gwangyang, South Korea, where the definitive 22-man squad will be chosen, the Nigeria FA said.

Nigeria - who won the Games in 1996 - will move on to Tianjin for their first Group B match against Netherlands on August 7.

Japan and the USA. are also in the group.

  1. If Nigeria can undergo with properly home assignment, to pick the best of Nigerian footballers in both Local and State teams levelin Nigeria, I believe we can achieve our winning in any football competitions, than focus on the International once, because many of them are not doing better in their recent team.(our emphasis on internation once is making us to be wrong side, because we are after big names) Nevertheless i wish Nigeria good luck.
