Southend manager Steve Tilson has been happy with his side's start to their pre-season programme - but is still hoping to add four new faces.

They continued their build-up over the weekend with a 0-0 draw at Canvey Island followed by a 4-0 win over Thurrock.

Tilson told the Southend Echo: "I think we're looking really good at the moment but I still want to bring in another four players before we get going for real. We're short of numbers and that's something we obviously need to sort out.

"But I've been encouraged by the friendlies so far and I think we're looking good. The games are more about fitness and at Canvey on Friday we fielded a young side and it was good for them to get the 90 minutes.

"Against Thurrock we fielded stronger team and looked very sharp indeed, which is great when you consider we've only really been back a couple of weeks and this is the first time a lot of the lads have played a full game for quite a while."

Meanwhile, the Shrimpers, who face Fulham on Tuesday night, have announced another friendly for Wednesday against Ryman League First Division side Witham Town.
