Alguersuari set for Toro Rosso

Toro Rosso are expected to part company with Sebastien Bourdais before next week's Hungarian Grand Prix, with Spanish teenager Jaime Alguersuari set to replace him as Formula One's youngest ever driver.

The Autosport website said an announcement about the Frenchman's future was expected within 48 hours.

Toro Rosso and team boss Franz Tost declined to comment on the situation at the German Grand Prix at the weekend as speculation swept the Nuerburgring paddock.

Alguersuari, the British Formula Three champion, is competing for his Carlin team in a World Series by Renault race at Le Mans - Bourdais' home town - this weekend and his confirmation could be delayed until next week.

The Barcelona-born driver (pictured) appeared to confirm the move to Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso in comments to Catalunya Radio.

"I honestly think the Red Bull decision is right, but it is never good for someone to be left out of a team halfway through a season," he said.

Four-times Champ Car champion Bourdais was the first driver to retire from Sunday's race and has been out-performed by Swiss rookie team mate Sebastien Buemi.

Alguersuari was appointed Red Bull and Toro Rosso's reserve driver before last weekend's race.

If confirmed for Hungary, he will make his debut aged 19 years and 125 days. The previous youngest was New Zealand's Mike Thackwell, who entered the 1980 Canadian Grand Prix with Tyrrell aged 19 and 183 days.

  10. What STR isn't saying: The word is that Toro Rosso­ is looking to use Alguersuari in the long term and is­ interested in doing a deal with Spanish oil giant­ Repsol, which is a supporter of the youngster.

    This is­ all about Scuderia Toro Rosso chasing the money and­ nothing about Bourdais' inability to drive a­ wretched car.

    Torro Rosso must have known exactly what they were­ doing, Hartley is the pride of New Zealand and would­ IMO have been a great addition to the grid especially­ lining up against local rival Webber, would have been­ great to watch. Instead Hartley gets the boot and a­ press statement stating he doesnt enjoy hanging around­ not driving and then all of a sudden Alguersuari­ replaces him, and a week later Alguersuari gets an­ actual F1 seat. Talk about pre-planning.

  17. JAYANTILAL, I have to agree with you. Tost seems to be­ working on a habit of tossing drivers out mid-season­ (ref Scott Speed), should Seb's departure get­ confirmed. Buemi needs to watch it. A sad state, that­ team.
