Transfers - Carlos Tevez: The full saga

Eurosport - Tue, 14 Jul 16:41:00 2009

We chart Carlos Tevez's time at Manchester United and all the major developments of his transfer saga.

2008-2009 Wigan-Manchester United Carlos Tevez celebrates scoring the equalising goal - 0

31 August 2006 - Signs for West Ham from Corinthians in a controversial third-party deal from the MSI company that eventually leads to legal action and a £20 million settlement paid to Sheffield United, who were relegated at the end of the season. Fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano joins him.

10 August 2007 - After an epic transfer saga, joins Manchester United on a two-year loan from MSI.

26 July 2008 - MSI chief Kia Joorabchian says he is confident Tevez will sign permanently with United: "Manchester United have been fantastic with Carlos - he's very lucky to have them and they are lucky too because he's been very good for them. It looks like it should happen - but we don't know the timing, whether it will be a month, two or six."

17 October 2008 - Tevez denies reports he is unhappy at United, despite the club's reluctance to pay MSI's £30m asking price to make the transfer permanent.

13 November 2008 - Argentina boss Diego Maradona reveals Tevez is unhappy at losing his United place to new signing DimitarBerbatov: "Tevez is worried about not being in United's first choice team."

5 January 2009 - Tevez says he is unhappy with manager Alex Ferguson's handling of the situation and says he has not been offered a new contract: "I didn't like him (Ferguson) saying I didn't like the offer I was made because neither my agent nor me were given one. I want to stay but the club have not made any offer. I've been waiting for them for a year and a half."

January 2009 - Real Madrid are linked with a £25m bid for Tevez, either in the winter transfer window or at the end of the season. Internazionale are also thought to be interested.

20 February 2009 - Joorabchian openly invites offers from clubs with United still refusing to make a permanent bid: "Carlos is in the market now that United have not made any move for him. We are now studying other options and interested parties."

22 April 2009 - Tevez hints that he will leave because he is not playing enough big games: "I have not played in important matches. The 'clasico' against Chelsea I did not play. Those are the games that I like to play in."

24 April 2009 - Ferguson insists United want Tevez to stay: "I think he genuinely wants to stay here and that is something we are trying to work towards. I have told him that repeatedly. And there is not much more I can do."

10 May 2009 - Tevez says he expects to leave the club, who he feels have treated him badly: "I don't think I will be a Manchester United player next season. I do not feel wanted. I feel bad over my situation. I do, but it's very, very difficult to stay any longer. I guess what I'm saying is goodbye."

17 May 2009 - Immediately after helping United clinch the Premier League title, Tevez repeats his intention to leave Old Trafford: "I know that I am not going to continue at Manchester United. I feel that they have lacked respect towards me."

June 2009 - New Real Madrid president Florentino Perez shows no desire to sign Tevez, but reported interest comes from closer to home in the shape of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.

June 9, 2009 - Radio station TalkSport claim that Carlos Tevez has agreed to join Manchester City. No-one else has said it yet though.

June 15 - Despite Cristiano Ronaldo's record move to Madrid freeing up £80m for United, reports in England claim that Tevez will not stay even if they meet MSI's asking price. It seems the Argentine is tempted by Manchester City's offer of a guaranteed start and a bumper wage.

June 19 - The Sun reports that Carlos Tevez will only re-sign with Manchester United if they make him joint highest paid player at the club matching the £110,000 a week paid to Dimitar Berbatov and Rio Ferdinand. Sky Sports News reports that Tevez will not sign for Liverpool because of their rivalry with United.

June 20 - United confirm that Tevez will not stay at Old Trafford despite being offered a five-year contract. The club say they agreed a £25.5m fee with MSI but Tevez rejected the contract.

June 25 - Kia Joorabcian says a decision on Tevez's future will be made within 10 days, indicating that Manchester City is the most likely destinantion. "City is a club with most of the chances because they are building a big squad, but it is not a decisive point," he says.

June 26 - The Sun claim that Tevez will go to City after it is revealed that his four-year-old daughter, Florencia, has been enrolled at a Manchester private school.

July 13, morning - After a spell of calm while Tevez went on holiday, reports in England say he will sign for City in the next few days so he can link up with a pre-season tour of South Africa.

July 14, afternoon - Manchester City announce that they have completed the signing of the Argentine after he passed a medical and agreed a five-year deal at Eastlands. Tevez is presented at the City of Manchester Stadium with manager Mark Hughes saying: "Carlos is an international player of the highest class who possesses all the attributes that will help drive this club forward. I cannot wait to welcome him to City."

  1. The Sun reports that Carlos Tevez will only re-sign with Manchester United if they make him joint highest paid player at the club matching the £110,000 a week paid to Dimitar Berbatov and Rio Ferdinand. A million pound every 9 weeks? The fans are being taken to the cleaners, these wages are obscene, stupid

  3. michaelefc78...You appear to have slightly overlooked the reason , THE reason why United, Liverpool and Chelsea are at the top end of the league year in year out. It the Money honey.
They have consistantly spent more on players than the other clubs. Rio (was most expensive defender), Berbatov(I'm holding out for the big money move to United), Rooney. United have consistantly had CL, League and Cup moneis piled into the pot at the end of the last 10ish seasons.
They are in the position they hold due to the financial situation of recieving at least 50-70 million more than everyone else EVERY season...thats a free Rooney+Berbatov quality player every year.
And now you think that City can't do it...maybe not this next two seasons...but watch this space.
He who buys the best players tends to win out in the end.

I hope this is just a rumour, Tevez is a great player at a great team so why go to City? cos they are far from being great! they have signed some good players but you dont have to look too deep to find what convinced Santa Cruz, Barry etc.. to join Mr Hughes's mercenaries.By spending a few more billion City may well finish top 5 but it will take more than an open cheque book to become as good as United, Alex Ferguson knows that & thats not how he made his teams the best, but I feel sorry for teams like Villa & Everton. David Moyes has taken Everton from a poor team (in both meanings of poor) to a consistant top5 team who although still not on the same level as the big 4 (or is it 3?) are certainly heading in the right direction, Moyes has done this slowly with compairibly -(?) very little money & should be, with a couple of signings, looking forward along with Villa& possibly da yids to beating Arsenal to 4th; BUT City think "we'll have him, him & him"& hey presto!- go from very average mid table team to champions league place almost overnight! The sad thing is, it COULD happen! If City do finish ahead of Everton,Villa or Arsenal then thats me for one finished with the game! Still! at least City cant go from @#$% team to winning the title by just throwing obscene amounts of cash around can they?- can they? OH my god! I just remembered ---Chelsea!

  8. Man City can offer players nothing but money. Players are snubbing United and Chelsea, not because they want to play for City, but because of the wages they are offered. Sometimes nearly twice as much as other clubs are willing to pay. (Tevez proves my point). It must be a good feeling to be a City fan, and know you have nothing more than a team of mercenaries playing for them.

  9. carlos is a fantastic player, yes his goalscoring record for a striker isn't the best but the workrate and commitment he shows when on the pitch is second to none, he was a well love player at mancjester united with all the fans and they all wanted him to stay, fergie should have made his mind up a long time before he offered him a contract, he was not shown the respect he deserved, he deserves to play at the highest level and to be playing week in week out, if he tinks that manchester city is the club for him then so be it

  12. HA united`s loss, possibly city`s gain, though if tevez did come to city, would pay double to see tevez score against united in the derby matches, better still the nose of fergie glowing with anger....ha ha united are big time losers,,...not many can replace the portugese fall boy and tevez...not a title contending team for next season with so many losers in the united side

  17. Tevez won't play much more for Man City than he did for united, especially if they get Eto'o. Hughes will opt for Santa Cruz and Robinho on most occasions, as tevez and robinho would be a @#$% partnership.

  18. Dear Man Utd,

Serve you RIGHT!! You got owned because you gave up on a consistent striker-Tevez and chose a useless striker-Berbatov.

  19. Question. your working for a company on a temp contract you work really hard but dont seem to get the recognition you feel you deserve, you dont get on with the manager and feel like your not valued by him.
After 2 years of being treated like an outsider a man comes along and says I think your a hard worker come and work for me I will pay you more money and give you some respect, in return I want you to keep working hard and If we reach our Targets I will reward you with bonuses.

    What would you do?

Take the offer from the boss you dont see eye to eye with, and has kept you on a temp contract for 2 years or take the full time job on more money.

  20. Hmm post 81 Blind Faith doesnt make a team, are u a realist ?
Ronaldo has single handed won United at least 2- 3 cups.
To Buy A p layer in the inflated market u created would cost more than 80 million,
I remember Ferdinand 8 Years ago United payed 33 million and 100k wages?
It was ok then why has your club now not got the finacial clout. AND Madrid have yet to pay 1 penny for Ronaldo he IS STILL a United player.

Is this Saga gonna end or will madrid MILK it and Milk it and not sign him.

    How funnty would that be.

    In a word Quite.
