County - Round-up: Nash leads Sussex to win

Eurosport - Fri, 14 Aug 09:14:00 2009

Chris Nash scored his second century of the season as Sussex eased their County Championship relegation fears with an eight-wicket victory over struggling Worcestershire.

CRICKET Chris Nash Sussex - 0

Having endured a poor start to the second innings and closing at 71 for four, Worcestershire's batting improved slightly at Hove as Steve Davies (67) helped them to a more respectable 235.

That left Sussex chasing a target of 212 and a century from Nash (pictured) ensured they achieved that with the loss of only two wickets.

A century from England hopeful Jonathan Trott and an unbeaten 92 from current international Ian Bell helped Warwickshire fight back against Nottinghamshire.

After Charlie Shreck wrapped up Warwickshire's first innings by bowling Boyd Rankin, the visitors to Trent Bridge were asked to follow on, still 169 runs behind.

But Trott and Bell put on 188 for the third wicket - a new club record against Nottinghamshire - to push ahead of the hosts and press their England claims ahead of the final Test at The Oval.

Trott was the more aggressive of the pair and hit 20 fours from 177 balls before he was lbw to Ryan Sidebottom for 121, his fourth hundred of the season, while Bell hit 10 boundaries as Warwickshire finished on 298 for three, 129 ahead.

Adil Rashid hit a career-best 117 not out against Hampshire as Yorkshire sensed the possibility of a first win in 20 Championship matches at Basingstoke.

Rashid and Ajmal Shahzad put on 192 for the eighth wicket, a Yorkshire record, as Hampshire contributed to their own downfall with a catalogue of dropped catches.

Rashid's innings included a six and 14 fours and came off 190 balls, and when he came off the pitch to a deserved ovation Yorkshire were leading by 274.

Hampshire were 75 for two at stumps in their second innings, still 199 away from making Yorkshire bat a second time.

Michael Di Venuto's 84 enabled Division One leaders Durham to establish a clear advantage on day three of their match against Lancashire at Old Trafford. By the close Will Smith's batsmen had built a lead of 261 with five second-innings wickets in hand.

Leicestershire battled back after being challenged to score 301 runs to avoid an innings defeat by Derbyshire in the Division Two clash.

With captain Chris Rogers leading the way with 163, Derbyshire piled up 478 for eight before declaring their first innings 40 minutes after lunch having collected maximum batting points and established a lead of 301.

They then removed Leicestershire opener Greg Smith without a run on the board before a century stand between Matt Boyce and Boeta Dippenaar launched the home side's fightback.

Although Dippenaar was out for 37, Boyce, dropped on 17, was still there at the close on 72 with Leicestershire 154 for two, trailing by 147 runs.

A battling 150 by Essex's winter recruit Matthew Walker ensured first-innings honours finished even in their basement battle against Middlesex.

Essex reached 345 to concede an 11-run deficit but there was still time for Middlesex to start their second innings.

With 21 overs remaining, struggling Middlesex would have wanted to push on and build on their slender lead but a dramatic six-over burst by Pakistan wrist spinner Danish Kaneria left the hosts reeling on 47 for three at the close.

Former England international Geraint Jones was one of three batsmen to make half centuries as Kent took their clash with Northamptonshire by the scruff of the neck at Wantage Road.

Jones ended day three unbeaten on 85 while Joe Denly and Martin van Jaarsveld scored 59 and 52 respectively to put Kent on top at 220 for two at the close of play.

Only David Lucas and Nicky Boje struck for the hosts as Kent - who bowled Northants out for 218 earlier in the day - comfortably extended their lead to 246.

  1. Berkshieredean, Absolutely spot on. Great rant in my opinion.

From nocohere, on Thu 13 Aug 10:42AM
  2. Drop that dandy boy Cook. He's been rubbish so far (his 95 at Lord's the exception), but has escaped under the radar. Why has nobody called for his Donny Osmond head to roll? We need more grunt at 1 & 2, not public school poofery from a 2nd division Essex player. Could bring Sidebottom into the attack too. he'd love to stick it up 'em. And Somebody punch that sodding Cheshire cat grin off Strauss' face when he's in full view up on the balcony. Laughing like a pant-wetting schoolboy when we were 5 for 78 or whatever it was. It's not on. Unfortunately he usually spends most of his day up there after throwing away his wicket cheaply.

In: Trescothick, Key and either Ramps or Trott.

    Out: Bopara, Collingwood, Bell.

Undecided: Sidebottom for Harmison or Onions.

And before any Aussies rave on about panicking and not looking to youth blah blah - You dropped Philip Hughes for Shane Watson and Nathan Hauritz for Stuart Clarke. Plus this is a one off, a cup final and we need all the experience we have, not a rush of youthful blood at the crucial moment. The young blokes will keep for later on.

    Rant Over.

  3. I think Trescothick has been a brilliant servant for English Cricket BUT I would not bring him back to the test arena. Not in this game. I admit he's our best opener...when he wants to be. With the pressure of a one-off winner takes all match, he could mentally crack. I like the idea of Corky returning but it won't happen. Personally, I'd have loved to see Pothas as an opener and wicketkeeper. He's been brilliant for years at Hampshire but never gets mentioned. He should have been the replacement for Geraint Jones those couple of years ago. But Prior has easily done enough to retain his place and ironically has been our best player. Sidebottom has to come in too. And bring in Ramps if only for his incredible knowledge of the Oval pitch. It's his home ground and he deserves one more chance surely? But I did enjoy the idea of Robert Key as captain too. Unfortunately, the MCC don't!

  4. Andrew G at 19 - remember the disaster of ASHES 2006-7. We LOST 5-0. Time for revenge. Monty then on Perth's paradise for the quicks took 5 in an innings & 8 for the match. The best ever by an English Spinner & we have had a few good ones over the years. So don't knock him before he starts to weave his magic on another perfect batsman's pitch. His wickets at the OVAL will do the talking for us all. It's time anyway the Umpires started to make a few decisions themselves rather than relying on TV guesswork. Anyhow where's Dickie ?

  5. Whats the big deal over bringing Panasar back? every test side' sussed him out+he gets most umpires backs up with his incesssant appealing

From ANDREW G, on Wed 12 Aug 5:13PM
  6. Michael 16 - you just need 2 changes to yours & you will then be the fans choice for sadly needed new appointment as lay selector. For this crucial 1 off Test - omit Ramps. Move others up 1. Bring Dominic [Mr Motivator] Cork in as Captain [bowler/batsmen] at No.6. Leave remainder but play 2nd Spinner Monty as a certainty. The only option then for the Aussies is to pray for rain before we send them packing again. Watchtower 111 John

  9. What is the betting if Key is brought back and is a hero, Key to be the next Captain? Strauss although I think is a great batsman he has shown through lack of firm leadership that he has not the right quality to lead a team. As for KP being captain again it all depends whether his personality medication is up to the job. Anyway let him try and become captain of South Africa if he wants.

  14. Actually, you can just blame Bopara. But I think Strauss isn't Captain material either. Give it back to Pieterson. Strauss is just a nodding-donkey for the establishment. Give it to someone who wants to win, not a brown nose!

England cant just blame Bopara for the mess they are in. Why dont they just get real and take pride in saying Australia, S.A., India, Pakistai & Sri Lanka are way better
