BMC Racing rider Markus Zberg has retired from professional cycling after his serious crash at the Tour de l'Ain last weekend.
Swiss Zberg, 35, spent 14 years in the pro ranks before breaking the iliac crest on his pelvis and a rib in the accident, effectively ending his season.
He is a twice national champion and won a silver medal at the 1999 World Championships.
"For me, this crash and the serious injury resulting from it indicate for me that it is time to end my career," he said. "The decision is definite."
BMC manager Gavin Chilcott said: "We respect Markus's decision and are proud that he has been a part of our team for this season.
"His personality and experience made a huge contribution to the development of our team as a whole."

One of the unsung heroes of professional cycling. I hope he's made enough to retire.
A great shame but nothing to be ashamed about.
Thanks for all you gave to the sport and the fans.
True pro will be missed by all in the Peleton.
