Michael Stewart has been handed the captain's armband by Hearts manager Csaba Laszlo.
The Jambos boss revealed recently that Stewart and Marius Zaliukas had emerged as the two leading candidates for the role.
Zaliukas will act as vice-captain but Laszlo stressed the responsibility will be very much shared between the two players.
Robbie Neilson took over the captaincy in January following Christophe Berra's departure to Wolves but the right-back's move to Leicester left the skipper's position vacant again.
Laszlo told the club's official website, www.heartsfc.co.uk: "I really have two captains. They will have joint responsibility.
"For example, Marius is coming with me to the Scottish FA meeting at Hampden and will feature in the promotional photograph for the Clydesdale Bank.
"Michael will do other jobs but we will share and we will learn and grow together."
