Serie A - Round-up: Milan lose again

Eurosport - Sun, 14 Sep 21:59:00 2008

Milan continued their terrible early-season form with a 2-0 Serie A defeat at Genoa, making it two losses in two matches.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Serie A Genoa-Milan Borriello Kaką Seedorf - 0

GENOA 2 MILAN 0

Giuseppe Sculli fired the home side in front on the half hour after Diego Milito had chested the ball into his path in front of goal.

Milan tried to respond after the break but Genoa were more dangerous on the counter-attack and Milito sealed the win with a late penalty after a foul by Paolo Maldini.

Milan have no points in Serie A following their 2-1 defeat by promoted Bologna at the San Siro in their opener.

----

JUVENTUS 1 UDINESE 0

A second-half strike from Amauri gave Juventus three points against Udinese in Serie A.

Brazilian-Italian Amauri finished low past Samir Handanovic after Momo Sissoko failed to get a close-range shot away.

The win put the Bianconeri in joint third and came after incessant pressure and several missed chances, particularly from Vincenzo Iaquinta.

Dane Christian Poulsen also hit the crossbar with a long-range shot.

---

BOLOGNA 0 ATALANTA 1

Atalanta's Tiberio Guarente slotted the ball home with Bologna keeper Francesco Antonioli caught off his line in the ninth minute.

Bologna never looked likely to equalise and the visitors deservedly made it two wins from their first two league games.

---

LAZIO 2 SAMPDORIA 0

Mauro Zarate curled a splendid shot under the crossbar in the seventh minute and his strike partner Goran Pandev controlled a long pass before knocking the ball past Sampdoria keeper Antonio Mirante in the 72nd to maintain Lazio's 100 percent record.

----

LECCE 2 CHIEVO 0

Second-half goals by Fabio Caserta and Jose Castillo gave Lecce victory over their uninspired visitors.

----

NAPOLI 2 FIORENTINA 1

Adrian Mutu put Fiorentina in front after Alberto Gilardino's delightful flick with the outside of his boot five minutes before the break, although Television replays suggested the Romania striker might have been offside.

Napoli came back in the second half with a Marek Hamsik tap-in and a headed goal by Christian Maggio.

----

REGGINA 1 TORINO 1

Former Reggina striker Nicola Amoruso gave Torino the lead in the 13th minute with a deflected shot after the home side had twice hit the woodwork.

The hosts equalised just before the break when Torino defender Marco Di Loreto diverted a cross into his own net.

----

SIENA 2 CAGLIARI 0

Emanuele Calaio poked the Tuscan hosts ahead in the 10th and substitute Abdel Kader Ghezzal coolly finished off a counter-attack deep into stoppage time to make it 2-0.

Argentine forward Joaquin Larrivey had had a goal disallowed for a dubious offside and missed a sitter in the second half.

  1. the problem with a c milan has to do with the coach.
he needs to be changed.the coach has very good players at his disposal but he
doesnt know what to do with them.so far he is just trying different formations.

  2. undaunted, never to be underestimated, ever reliable, unending fighting spirit, a winner,( proven overtime), all of this are qualities possessed by Jose mourinho, i guess all of you that are saying the "great coach" can't make a mark in the game in Italy are getting it all wrong and you will not be blame because you obviously don't know who the special one is, anyway this will not come as a surprise to him because comments like this have been made before by people who are even more tactically alive than all of you here, and i can tell you it can only make him stronger and want to do more and bolster his already success filled CV, so all of this criticism are welcome and i daramola olatunji, the greatest fan that mourinho can ever have is telling all ya that, criticism wont kill him and can only make him more stronger. in the face of adversities he is gonna do it again with inter. y'all go'n see. forza mourinho

  5. Haha...inter barely made it past Catania...AT HOME...give me a break...Mourinho might be good but he's not God and the only reason why Inter won the last 3 titles is because there was no real challange for them except Roma...but now Juve has rebuilt their team and are title favorites...alongside Roma who didn't get to a great start but they will imporve

  7. You have to laugh at a few of these comments bigging up the Italian league.
Like it or not, it's the weakest out of the top 3 league (other two being Premier League and La Liga). It's also been disgraced by constant fan riots, deaths, bribery etc.
The only thing it has going for it is the tactical aspect of games along with the introcution of Mourinho and Ronaldinho to the league. Even so, Mourinho will find it hard to win the Champions League with the squad he has and Ronaldinho isn't going to turn around a Milan squad which is WAY past it's sell by date.

  8. "Enbrosnan" you are clueless about italian football. After watching the EPL so much, the Serie A is a breath of fresh air. Technically and tactically things are so much better. Not only that, but it actually has passion and pride; the premier league is full of foreign players, coaches, owners, billionaires, the lot. And Ancelotti is not a cup specialist; he is better at cups yes, but look at the players at his disposal, they can't play good that often, they're too old. In 2003/2004 they won Serie A; and now we are in 2008/2009 season and many of their players haven't changed - that's why they aren't good at playing over a season. Their defense was abysmal against Genoa, just look at their age: Zambrotta (31 years old), Favalli (36), Maldini (40), Jankulovski (31). The most amazing thing is that they NEED Maldini! ! ! And Inter won't win the Serie A this year, JUVE will! ! ! Had the season gone 2 game longer last season, Roma probably would have won it.

  9. "Mourinho will not win titles with Inter. Serie A is the real deal and every team can beat any other team"

Do you watch italian football? It's in an awful state. Inter should win the title easily, despite been a VERY average side. As for AC milan, they need 4 new defenders, a keeper, striker and a new coach if they want to compete in for the title. Ancelotti is a cup specialist- even when milan were the best side in italy they still couldn't win the league despite playing Juv/inter/roma off the pitch season after season when they met.

  10. Milan is so pathetic...

  11. Mourinho will not win titles with Inter. Serie A is the real deal and every team can beat any other team. This is not like England or even worse Portugal. Inter will regret getting rid of one of the finest "new" coaches since Cappello, Lippi, Trappatoni, Zoff and Sacchi. I say Juve and Milan will be serious contenders this year but I just wonder who is gonna be the surprise team.. not Roma for sure..

  13. Hope Jose Mourinho wins Serie A to show Abramovich what a mistake he made in forcing him out of Chelsea. Go Jose, go Azzuri. You'll never be forgotten at Chelsea, all fans wish you well.
