Champions League - Behind Enemy Lines

Eurosport - Mon, 14 Sep 17:16:00 2009

A look at the opposition to the four English clubs in the first group stage matches of the Champions League.

FOOTBALL Galatasaray 3-0 Beskitas, Mustafa Sarp and Matteo Ferrari - 0

GROUP B

Besiktas (face Manchester United at the BJK Inonu on September 15)

Galatasaray 3-0 Besiktas

Besiktas have had a dreadful start to the season, with just one win in five matches including a 3-0 spanking by title rivals Galatasaray.

Mustafa Sarp (pictured on the left, being restrained by Matteo Ferrari) put the hosts ahead on four minutes.

Besiktas coach Mustafa Denizli's decision to take off striking duo Nihat and Rodrigo Tello at half-time was punished as a second-half brace from Milan Baros made it a mini-rout.

Besiktas lie 11th in the league.

CSKA Moscow 3-0 Krylya Sovetov

Wolfsburg 2-3 Bayer Leverkusen

GROUP D

Porto (face Chelsea at the Estadio Dragao on September 15)

Porto 4-1 Leixoes

Another good day at the office for the Portuguese champions as goals from Silvestre Varela, Hulk, Rolando and Radmael Falcao put them 4-0 up at half-time.

Uruguay left-back Alvaro Pereira, one of five players picked up by private jet in order to get back time after the World Cup qualifiers, assisted the first three goals.

Christian Pouga got a consolation for Leixoes but the hosts made it 10 points in four matches with an easy win.

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Racing Santander

APOEL Nicosia 0-0 Paphos

GROUP E

Debrecen (face Liverpool at Anfield on September 16)

Paks 0-1 Debrecen

The Hungarian champions moved fifth in the standings after a narrow win at Paks.

Midfielder Peter Szakaly got the only goal of the game on 33 minutes.

Debrecen have 12 points from five matches but two games in hand over leaders Ferencvaros, who are three points ahead.

Lyon 1-0 Lorient

Fiorentina 1-0 Cagliari

GROUP H

Standard Liege (face Arsenal at Stade Maurice Dufrasne on September 16)

Standard Liege 3-0 Mechelen

Standard's win came at a price as captain Steven Dufour picked up a broken foot and will miss the match.

His team-mate Axel Witsel could play instead: the eight-match ban Witsel was given for a horror-tackle - a challenge which broke the leg of Poland left-back Marcin Wasilewski - does not apply to European competition since the foul was committed in a league match.

Standard won the match thanks to a brace from Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez and a goal from Eliaquim Mangala, all of which came in the second half.

Den Haag 2-1 AZ Alkmaar

Olympiacos 0-0 Kavala
