Premier League - Hughes defends Adebayor

Eurosport - Mon, 14 Sep 18:48:00 2009

Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has defended under-fire striker Emmanuel Adebayor, saying there was "no malice" in challenge that gashed the face of former Arsenal team-mate Robin van Persie.

FOOTBALL 2009-2010 Premier League Manchester City-Arsenal, Adebayor Van Persie - 0

Adebayor, signed by City from Arsenal for £25 million last month, has been accused of deliberately stamping on van Persie during City's 4-2 win in what the Dutch striker has condemned as a "mindless and malicious" assault.

Hughes, who faces the prospect of losing Adebayor for at least three matches starting with the Manchester derby at the weekend, insisted that the contact had been accidental.

"Emannuel Adebayor sustained a tremendous amount of personal abuse from the kick-off but strongly maintains that there was no malice intended in the challenge on Robin van Persie," Hughes told his club's website.

The City boss also claimed that Adebayor had apologised to Van Persie when the two players hugged at the end of the match - a version of events disputed by the Arsenal player.

Most pundits have concluded that Adebayor, who enjoyed an unhappy final year at Arsenal after being made a scapegoat for the club's lack of silverware by the Gunners' fans, did deliberately seek to make contact with Van Persie.

The extent of any ban will depend on whether referee Mark Clattenburg, who missed the incident at the time, agrees with that view when he reviews it.

Hughes felt Clattenburg was in a good position to see what happened and argued that, therefore, the issue should be left there.

"The referee had a great view of the challenge from Ade and the one that preceded it by Van Persie and deemed at the time that neither were worthy of either a yellow or red card," Hughes explained

As well as facing a possible three-match ban for violent conduct, Adebayor is also likely to be charged with improper conduct after provocatively celebrating his goal in City's 4-2 win in front of the Arsenal supporters.

That led to a steward being hit by a missile thrown from the Arsenal section of the ground and Adebayor's conduct has been severely criticised by Manchester police.

  1. Leave Adebayor alone and stop victimising him. Why cannot you do the same to Cristiano Ronaldo. He got transferred for far more money. What exactly is this about?

  2. Hughes, a nice enough bloke, has undergone a brain and imagination transplant on becoming a manager, and now claims to know what is in his players' minds, Savant, or what ? If we expect honesty from anyone in so-called ' sport ' we will be permanently disappointed......because they are all living in a permanent time bubble called retarded development. I say this, sadly, as a sports lover.

  4. Adebayor did not do well at all especially the Van Persie incident. Anyone that claims it was not intentional is either telling an obvious lie or he/she has not seen the video.

  5. I am a neutral footbal watcher. Adebayor's behaviour was disgraceful and a terrible example to our impressionable young children and teenagers. The replay pictures showed a delay before he planted his boot firmly in Van Persie face. There was clear evidence of malice of forethought in his behaviour and he should be severely punished. It would not be unreasonable for him to be charged with assault by the Police, because it would send a very clear message to all the other anti-social degenerates who masquerade as professional footballers in the football league! His further act of running the whole length of the pitch to insight the Arsenal fans could have caused a riot resulting innocent spectators being seriously crushed or killed. Adebayor should be reminded of the Hillsborough disaster and the terrible events in the Heysel Stadium Disaster resulting in the deaths of 39 (and injury of some 600 more). All the result of fighting in the Stadium. What is even more worrying is that his manager (like so many football managers) doesnt have the moral courage to publicly condemn such unacceptable behaviour. No wonder British Football and football in general is in such a chronic state of malaise!!

  6. I find quite hypocritical that video evidence cannot be used to reward a player who may have genuinely scored but had his goal disallowed for whatever reason. But now video evidence is being used to punish players for missed offences long after a game has been played and decided....rubbish!!!

  7. When Mark Hughes was playing with Man Utd he took his fair share of abuse and hard tackles on the field of play. But to try and defend Adebayor's stamp on Van Persie is obscene, and he should be the first to take action against the player. And I dont like Van Persie!

  12. What Adebayor did was unsportsmanlike, he should remember that Arsenal is the club that shaped him for better and that football is a friendly game which even makes a war stop and enemies become friends for the good of the sport. The behaviour is characteristic of African football in some quarters and this is not the message we would want to send out there now that we are hosting the Biggest football mundial in the continent in the name of the world cup in SA.

It is shameless, mindless and it renders the phrase " professional footballers" irrelevant and embarrassing.

Emmanuel Adebayor should instead of justifying the action, come out and apologise like like Drogba did, it is more professional that way, over and above that the FA should institute severe action on the player for his conduct. This should be taken as a lesson to any other player who might have the ambition to do the same shameless act in future, remember some on the worst human conflict have been caused by senseless and mindless acts of provocation, this is one of them.

  13. Hughes is a liar. First he claimed that he did not see the incident. Now he say there is no malice. A liar is laways a liar. No matter how you twist youe words, in the end your liar face will show.

  15. hughes is a big fattt liar... at no time did Adebayor shook or embrace RVP.. nt that RVP wanted him to. but he is just trying to make excuse for what happened. it was obvious at what he did the ball was long gone and u can see the extra force in the step.

  16. Comment hidden due to its low rating. Show

i have been Ade's fan since henry left., arsenal shd hv not sold him, yes he had a bad season last season, but forgetting the other season he scored 30 goals.. so his celebration is to show arsenal wenger and the fans that they were wronge about him being a bad striker.
    the tackle..
van persie's first tackle was bad and shd have been been awarded a red card, and then Ade did his. 2 wronges, cancels each other.
everyone seems to be talking abt this bcos arsenal lost the again... if the had won, all the Ade saga would not have come up... but what u expect when u sell ur aces ( adebayor and toure).

  18. In fact isn't it about time the FA took note of almost every other sport and introduced a fourth match official, the ref said he didn't see the rake in the face the fourth official would have access to replay to advise the ref.
Is this the only way to assure fair play now?

  19. I am an Arsenal fan and let me say we were soundly beaten by the better team on the day, However Ade's assault? on RVP leaves a lot to be desired, I remember when it was called FOOTBALL not FOOTINTHEFACE, I can't see how anyone can say it was accidental if so that's like saying Eric Cantona's attack on the fan was an accidental jumping over the advertising hoardings.
When it's reviewed by all the FA'S officials I think Man city can expect to see Ade on a rather long vacation for raking rvp's face.
On the celebration on scoring, what Ade did was stupid beyond stupid, that was like pouring petrol on a fire. His actions deserve to be treated as harshly as possible it was almost like provoking a riot.
Hughes, you've possibly got a good team there but do you have the class??

well done city but we'll see you at the emirates soon enough

From STEVE, on Tue 15 Sep 12:29AM
  20. Adebayor deliberately stamped on Van Persie, and ran all the way to the Arsenal fans, to celebrate the goal. Apart from it possibly causing a riot, it is disrespectful, to do that to a team where you spent a little more than 3 years in. If he ran all the way, with hate to the Arsenal fans, don't you think the stamp was intentional? Moreover, Adebayor played little in the 08-09 season, compared to the 07-08 season. Van Persie was the one who played in his position! It can't be any clearer. To me, that is an 8-match ban.
