Premier League - Managers: O'Neill hails Gabe

Eurosport - Mon, 14 Sep 14:32:00 2009

Managerial reaction from the Premier League, with Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill tipping Gabriel Agbonlahor for an England recall.

2009-2010 Aston Villa Gabriel Agbonlahor - 0

Birmingham City 0-1 Aston Villa

Alex McLeish: "It is harsh result. There is no doubt about that. We played really well and got about Villa. I don't think we allowed them to play at all today. We nullified the threat of (Gabriel) Agbonlahor and (Ashley) Young. The difference between us and Villa, in financial clout and quality, is a big gulf but it didn't look like it today. Their goal was a free header and we have just got to deal with those balls. Roger Johnson was fantastic today but Carew slipped his grasp."

Martin O'Neill: "We put John (Carew) on and he made a big contribution to the winning goal. I am delighted for Gabby. Goals help his confidence enormously. It is a big lift for him. He was excellent against Liverpool and Fulham, and again today. Until the World Cup gathers momentum I have not got a major worry. If he continues to play and perform right through the season there is no reason for him to be disregarded."

Fulham 2-1 Everton

Roy Hodgson: "It was a wonderful goal and (Damien Duff) played well throughout the game. His crossing was good and it was nice to cap his second home game with a goal. It's important when you move clubs to show the fans immediately what you can do. I'm convinced there was no intent on Dickson (Etuhu)'s part. From what I understand it was the follow-through that caught Phil.

David Moyes on the Dickson Etuhu challenge that left Phil Neville injured: "It was a bad miss for the referee to miss that. In the football we play now it doesn't go on and I thought it warranted a free-kick and a yellow card. Phil has got a gash on his knee but he is not going to hospital. We will assess it later. I know Dickson quite well and I don't think he's that type of player. But I thought he was late getting there."

he belives he is right all the Bl@@dy time !!!!
But i agree we need Carew playing from the start time to sacrifice either sidwell or reo coker if you want to play Milner as well as Young

  8. The match was always going to about the last 15 minutes. The Blues players had to run very hard to contain Villa, but after 75 minutes hard running to then be faced with having to defend against Carew is a big ask, and likely too much for B'ham City.

  10. This will teach O'Neill not to play Agbonlahor up front on his own - If Jon Carew makes such a difference, play him from the start!
