Premier League - Paper Round: All nail Adebayor

Eurosport - Mon, 14 Sep 14:22:00 2009

Emmanuel Adebayor got a roasting in the press following his triple whammy for Manchester City against former club Arsenal.

FOOTBALL 2009-2010 Manchester City - Adebayor - 0

The Togo striker scored in City's 4-2 win, and could land himself a three-match ban and police charge for rushing 90 yards to bait the Arsenal supporters.

He earlier left Gunners striker Robin van Persie needing treatment to a cut face after catching him with a stray boot which, if the FA deem intentional, could see him suspended for three more matches.

Everyone published Van Persie's unprecedented statement calling the stamp a "mindless and malicious assault".

The Sun described his celebratory antics as "hair-brained" (sic), calling the Van Persie incident "vicious" and demanding a six-game ban.

The Mirror erred on the side of caution, hinting that a four-game suspension is forthcoming, and while Oliver Holt branded his antics the behaviour of a "loose cannon... inexcusable", he noted that Arsenal fans were not entirely innocent as they were singing an offensive chant at the former Monaco striker all game. The Daily Express suggested a five-match ban, The Star six.

The Daily Telegraph called Adebayor "spiteful" and "half brilliant, half senseless".

The same paper suggested that his forthcoming ban and absence from the game with Manchester United will play into City's hands though as he would be likely to lose the plot entirely in the "tinderbox atmosphere of derby day".

However, it could mean City play Benjani up front as Robinho, Carlos Tevez and Roque Santa Cruz all have injury problems.

Of course the Daily Mail had a right old rant at Adebayor, saying he will be banned for "at least four matches after a crazed rampage saw him rake his studs across Van Persie's face, stamp on Cesc Fabregas, slap Alex Song and start a mini-riot".

The incident sparked so much controversy that even the gentlemen of rugby had a dig (The Sun).

After things boiled over during London Irish's 40-10 win over Gloucester, Exiles boss Toby Booth said "the law was taken into various hands.

"But at this stage of the season, as we come out of a controversial summer for rugby, we don't want an Adebayor."

The irony of this comment is not lost after a match where six men were sin-binned - Gloucester were at one point down to 12 men - and referee Dean Richards had to calm three separate punch-ups, one of which saw Irish lock George Stowers bleeding after being punched in the face by Glos skipper Gareth Delve.

  1. Once you are mediocre in your efforts to become a cult-hero, you lose foresight ! In Kenya , we have an age-old adage that says "sometimes a man is taller when he bends". This shows that he has the ability to realise that humility is definitely a virtue while nubile stupidity is a vice.
Shame on you Adebayor. That act was not African at all.

  3. Ade just being stupid.A pro player with huge fat of salary did thing like that, ridiculous!!He not deserved to be in Premier League or any other professional league in the world. He should ban for life.Remember when legend Eric Cantona did the 'kung fu'?This is alot more worst!!!!Stupid ADE!!!

  5. It was good that Adebayor scored against Arsenal just like Aladiere always did.I was not happy that the gaffer let many top quality players leave without making impotant buys during the summer. We have seen an obvoius lapse in the team set up this term and AW has to do something in january - Chamakh and Blaise Matuidi and a Back up keeper. Having said that, Adebayor was no sportsman at all. He was like a bull in the China shop. He played destructive soccer and his temperament which he has shown with Togo and Arsewnal will soon start showing at City. The FA should look at all footages and do justice. Gunners for life !!!!

What were the Arsenal fans doing behaving like a bunch of yobs, spitting their dummies out because Manchester City are now a bigger club than them with much better players aswell? Just can't take getting beat can you Arsenal, lol! Well you girls better get used to it as we will take 6 points of you this season as your a bunch of soft players [too girly and your supporters too]. Your club tries to be dirty, cheats all the time, dives ob the floor and your manager kicks his water bottle. When you fairys get a bit back you simply can't take it and spitt you dummies out like the softies you are. Spurs have also made a better start to the season to make matters worse for another season for your so called big club without any silverware. Your also a poor club who doesn't have as much money than Manchester City the richest club in the world. How does it feel to drive up from the south knowing you are funding our great club? Why are you lot so bitter is it because your jelous and fear Manchester City. Your club is not as good as Manchester United [proven last week], Liverpool, and of course Chelsea are a far better team than what Arsenal could ever dream off. The best your team can hope for is a top 5 if you manage to overcome Spurs. Boring, Boring Arsenal always blaming someonelse when things go wrong or you don't win a game. Other clubs seem to accept things go wrong and can take a defeat, your manager is like a silly old woman when he loses. Emmanueal Adebayor has had is best start to the premiership yet you call him past it and can't get over the fact he left you for a bigger club who playes better football and are certainly not so girly in the tackle........ You've made a mistake not buying Patrick Veria back because none of you can tackle a ball and are a bunch of lightweights. To blame Emmanueal Adebayor for you lot kicking off is just an exmaple how pathetic you really are as a group of childish supporters. You idoits made the unwise decisi

  8. @ the people who say that the arsenal fans were in the wrong and got what they deserve with adebayors celebration - does anyone remember shortly after the David Beckham 'kick' incident in 1998, another england game saw england fans chant 'Your wifes a whore and we hope your kid has cancer' to him... His reaction was to stick his fingers up at the crowd in a fairly subdued manner, not inciting the crowd in any way.... Adebarndoor is a disgrace and a moron... He's someone who does not deserve to be a professional footballer...

  9. some idiot disagreed with my comment number 46..whoever you are,you are a fool+obviously know nothing!!Not only did he deliberately stamp on rvp face nearly taking his eye out,he ran the length of the pitch to taunt the arsenal fans.He set out that day like a thug in combat.I wouldnt think many people know this but do you know guys that this muppet adebayor also warmed up on arsenals half of the pitch?Any arsenal supporter seeing that would of been furious!!He says he doesnt think he deserves a ban and he is sorry for the stewart getting hit by a missile..does he not think the stewart wouldnt of got hit by a missile if he hadnt of done what he did?He knows damn well enough he went over the limit and therefore should get banned with a fine!If he cant take stick,he shouldnt be a soccer player as this kinda stick is happening in every division of the world. You dont see emile heskey acting like a thug trying to start a riot and taunting the opposing fans when he is been mimicked like a monkey!!

  12. A 1 match ban for the slap on song, a 2 match ban for the stamp on fabregas, a 3 match ban for inciting the crowd, a life ban for the blatant kick in the face on van persie, the death penalty for just being an @#$%......he's forgetting he's gotta come to the emirates later on this season, we won't forget what he's done in a hurry

  13. man city won the game clearly no excuse to that but if you are honest and could watch that video all over again. Adebayo did mean to stamp on van persie's head and thats where his case comes up. Its only if you choose to lie or tell the truth.

  14. It sulks to see that a player who had all his touch on the ball booed by senseless hooligans, specially hired in tghe name of fan, is now being called to be crucified for making the booers regret. If the fans can rant any insolence, why won't a player celebrate...Untrained Arsenal fans. They are only unhappy that they lost and may continue losing......

John L, I totally disagree with you that my point of view reflects that of a muppets. Firstly, I feel that your missing the point and I am not a muppet nor will you ever make me feel like that one. Adebayor didn't make the Arsenal fans angry they simply made themselves angry and lost self control. It wasn't all Arsenal fans that reacted and why is that? Simply because some have self control and don't deem it necessary to behave like wild monkeys from a zoo and respect children and the elderly are present. I did also say it shouldn't be tolerated in the game that anyone stamps on another persons head. However, when someone is diving in like a mad man at you and could break your leg and your also getting various remarks about your gender, ability and other personal insults and your giving your all to win any human being can hit out and if YOU think that is muppet talking. I disagree with you as Adebayor is only a human being. If you'd like me to throw my 6 ft 1 frame at you to take your legs and you never to react during a season I personally find that a bit hard and unfair and if you hit back I deemed to point I've deserved it.

  16. The papers should allow the FA to do their job. So many issues to be looked at. Adebayors celebration provocative? What about Arsnal fans? The stamp on Van Persie, is it intentional? Constructive appraisal is needed here. Please!

  17. Reference comment 53... My comment about Liverpool was a comment in passing and they are not part of the subject matter on this particular board. However, if you do not think that it is a fact that an historically massive club like Liverpool that has never won the Premiership/top flight division in 20 years does not deserve being labelled mediocre, then who does? Stick to bin-dipping and pick pocketing something... that you are good at!

  18. What Adebayo(r)did was a disgrace to we africans. He should have remembered the son of who he was. Another problem with most footballers is because they dont pursue formal education so they level they get to is least expected. I wnat him to be fined and given match ban but after their match with manchester united. Man u has a way of benefiting from other people's downfall. 20. Olugbena, to say in your African culture you don't condone such behaviour seems most far fetch and a dishonest claim considering what reacently happened in Zimbawe and the poltics of Libya and Somalia! Arsenal players you don't hit out when they are just as bad as my favorite team Man Utd and any other team that wants to win during a season. There is good and bad in most things and to thing your passion is any different is false and lacks commonsense and balanced view of yourself and others.
