Alonso seeks to help topple Hamilton

Eurosport - Tue, 14 Oct 17:29:00 2008

Fernando Alonso has said he will do what he can to help Ferrari's Felipe Massa beat Lewis Hamilton to the Formula One title after winning the last two grands prix for Renault.

2008 Singaporean GP Renault McLaren Alonso Hamilton - 0

"Yes, without doubt. If I can help, I will help Massa," the double world champion told Spanish newspapers after Sunday's victory in Japan.

Alonso, whose win at Fuji came two weeks after his surprise triumph in Singapore, fell out with championship leader Hamilton in an ill-fated 2007 season alongside the Briton at McLaren.

The Spaniard, who has been persistently linked to an eventual move to Ferrari, could become a factor in this year's title showdown if he continues to challenge for the podium in the remaining two races.

The 27-year-old has now scored more points (35) than any other driver in the six races since the German Grand Prix in July. Hamilton has taken 26 and Massa 25 in the same period.

Hamilton is five points clear of Brazilian Massa, whose team-mate and world champion Kimi Raikkonen is now out of contention, with only this weekend's race in China and the season-ender in Brazil still to come.

Massa, a favourite to win his home race in Sao Paulo, ideally needs a Ferrari one-two in Shanghai with Alonso rounding out the podium to make the necessary inroads into Hamilton's tally.

BMW-Sauber's Robert Kubica is the third man left in the title hunt, 12 points off Hamilton - and before the race criticised the Briton's driving style.

Raikkonen returned to the podium on Sunday for the first time since Hungary in August, ending a run of four races without a point, but many Brazilians suspect he may not be Massa's strongest ally on the racetrack.

Alonso and resurgent Renault may be of more assistance.

"We are now maybe just behind Ferrari and McLaren and this is completely amazing," said the Spaniard, whose team were struggling just to score points at the start of the year.

In the same news conference at Fuji, his enduring hostility towards McLaren and Hamilton was evident when the top three drivers were asked whether it was right for the Briton to have been handed a drive-through penalty for his start.

"I agree," Alonso said immediately, while Kubica and Raikkonen both said they did not have a clear enough picture to comment.

"I don't know what he did," the race winner said later. "But it's good he's punished anyway."

  1. Mclaren have been in the buisiness for longer than i can remember and have a very respected reputation and an even better record. In 2006 along comes a spaniard who`s been in the profession for the time mentioned and starts dissing and betraying a team well known for its profesionality and success.Ask any of the great drivers they`ve had.NONE HAS EVER COMPLAINED.BUt Alonso had such a massive ego that he could not understand, even less admit, that a rookie could be faster than he was.2006 did happen Alonso and all you got out of it was people in and around f1 circles having doubts about your character. For me its pretty clear, you`ve proven you are a traitor a baby cry and worse,a man with no ****.You could have done it so differently and gracefully.Your problem mate.Next time make sure your partner has a smaller ****.Put on some cream and get over it.

  12. 517 You have obviously never lived through the ghastly experiences of fatal crashes in F1 - your comments are despicable. To wish that on another human being, whether you have respect for them or not - is just horrendous. Be careful what you wish for other people. Go away and learn about life and respect and the great tradition that F1 has been and the very real bravery of the young men who regularly put their lives in jeopardy. So-called 'fans' of your like bring the sport down into the gutter. I hope you climb out of it soon or you will regret it.

  16. Sorry to say but at McCheat Ron never gave equal preference, au contraire he did the opposite for the spoilt brat LH. Alonso obbeyed team orders to slow down so LH could win as many races as he could and then he went on to nick all the pole laps from FA when it was not his turn. About blackmailing that is an excuse of all of you to smile in front of the cameras you were saints stealing intellectual property from Fiarrari. No doubt McCheat stabbed FA n he left the losing team 'cause FA twice a WDC and he'll always be again.

  17. When Alonso decided that he was going to join McLaren he must have known that McLaren do not have a preferential driver policy (No1 and No 2 Driver). Like they had at Ferrari (Schumacher days) and did have at his old firm Renault. Ron Dennis had been Trumpeting this fact for some time stating that unlike Farrari his drivers are allowed to fight it out. This is fact. So he must have known this when he joined McLaren. His problem was the new kid on the block. Hamilton. I expect he didn’t think he would need to be given the official status of number because he was two time world champion and he would blow Hamilton into the weeds. Hell! We all expected that to happen. But it fdidn’t happen. The brat Hamilton can drive we all saw it happen. Alonso Not only that but Hamilton didn’t give Alonso any respect. So you have a recipe for disaster. Alonso finding it hard to put the brat Hamilton in his place by beating him constantly and Hamilton not allowing himself to be intimidated by Alonso. Now! I think that Alonso has a point when he says he is world champion and should be No 1 driver. The problem as was stated before McLaren don’t do it. And he can’t keep Hamilton off his gearbox. This is when the childlike behaviour from Alonso started to make an appearance. Now I know that Hamilton’s attitude pissed him off. But Alonso should have risen above it. He after all was the F1 world champion. So he started with the childish antics one of which was to wait in the pits with Hamilton behind him as the qualifying clock counted down. Not the way a confident champion behaves. Then he threatens Ron Dennis with telling the FIA about the data that he was happy to use until Hamilton started beating him, Then “sabotage” Hamilton’s car was different to his. Then after McLaren Gate which he started by squealing to the FIA (although I believe it was the right decision to fine McLaren big time) So no! I don’t think Alonso has any class. But he is a fine driver and big time Cry Baby.
