Alonso seeks to help topple Hamilton

Eurosport - Tue, 14 Oct 17:29:00 2008

Fernando Alonso has said he will do what he can to help Ferrari's Felipe Massa beat Lewis Hamilton to the Formula One title after winning the last two grands prix for Renault.

2008 Singaporean GP Renault McLaren Alonso Hamilton - 0

"Yes, without doubt. If I can help, I will help Massa," the double world champion told Spanish newspapers after Sunday's victory in Japan.

Alonso, whose win at Fuji came two weeks after his surprise triumph in Singapore, fell out with championship leader Hamilton in an ill-fated 2007 season alongside the Briton at McLaren.

The Spaniard, who has been persistently linked to an eventual move to Ferrari, could become a factor in this year's title showdown if he continues to challenge for the podium in the remaining two races.

The 27-year-old has now scored more points (35) than any other driver in the six races since the German Grand Prix in July. Hamilton has taken 26 and Massa 25 in the same period.

Hamilton is five points clear of Brazilian Massa, whose team-mate and world champion Kimi Raikkonen is now out of contention, with only this weekend's race in China and the season-ender in Brazil still to come.

Massa, a favourite to win his home race in Sao Paulo, ideally needs a Ferrari one-two in Shanghai with Alonso rounding out the podium to make the necessary inroads into Hamilton's tally.

BMW-Sauber's Robert Kubica is the third man left in the title hunt, 12 points off Hamilton - and before the race criticised the Briton's driving style.

Raikkonen returned to the podium on Sunday for the first time since Hungary in August, ending a run of four races without a point, but many Brazilians suspect he may not be Massa's strongest ally on the racetrack.

Alonso and resurgent Renault may be of more assistance.

"We are now maybe just behind Ferrari and McLaren and this is completely amazing," said the Spaniard, whose team were struggling just to score points at the start of the year.

In the same news conference at Fuji, his enduring hostility towards McLaren and Hamilton was evident when the top three drivers were asked whether it was right for the Briton to have been handed a drive-through penalty for his start.

"I agree," Alonso said immediately, while Kubica and Raikkonen both said they did not have a clear enough picture to comment.

"I don't know what he did," the race winner said later. "But it's good he's punished anyway."

  1. Sorry, but Alonso got lucky and won the last couple of races. I'm not denying Alonso has talent ( with a deranged personality ), but *normally* he should not have had the chance of winning Singapore or Japan. Whether you like it or not, luck was involved, and I will agree that you sometimes need luck......and also that you can "make" your own luck. He was lucky that Ferrari still don't have a clue about pitstops, and in Japan that a silly move at the first corner by LH, followed by a bonehead move by Massa on LH allowed Alonso into the winning positions. Before the Alonso fans start ranting, Alonso admitted himself that he was lucky and that he thought that a win was not possible. In the same way, Vettel was also quite lucky in Monza.

In the case of Alonso at McLaren in 2007: I don't think he had a signed contract guaranteeing him Nr.1 status did he? A bit arrogant of him to *assume* that he is Nr.1, no? Mc Laren strive to give both drivers a fair chance, I'm sure much like Ferrari also do today ( not in Shumacher's time I might add! ). Surely the normal situation is to treat both drivers equally at the start of the season, until it later becomes clear which driver you should throw your resources behind. That is usually the driver with the highest number of WC points at that point. Hamilton had the highest number right up until the very last race. Alonso couldn't handle that. Go figure.......

  2. I belive LH will be 2008 world champ, nothing will change that. Massa is always favour by FIA by letting him get away with wrongs.
Fernando will never be a world champ when Lewis is a F1 driver.

  5. Gavin F and Casper J, you both obviously have strong feelings and support for your favourite drivers. But do you really need to swear and be so abusive on this board ?
If you cant express yourselves in a coherent manner with a reasoned and polite argument, then do everyone a favour and keep your thoughts to yourselves.

  7. To be honest English press made Hamilton so arrogant “golden boy” “next Schumacher”. Frankly he is lack of skills. He has the best car for last two seasons at F1 and for sure this car is too fast for him. Some people says he is only lack of experience but look at Kubica. Hi is only one month older than Hamilton. Compare to Lewis Kubica drives like professor. Hamilton never be a great driver. He is only brainless boy with very fast car – “golden car”.

  11. Not that I speak Alonso, but I saw Hamilton block brakes with lost return to advance dangerously to Alonso, does not seem normal, coverall, after blocking brakes in the first curve and to restrain to all cars, Hamilton is a danger in the F1 and also the press supports that it ncondicionalmente. Greetings

  12. Edward in 503:

It is not about aggressive driving or not, F1 is about driving skills. It seems Hamilton is playing "I dare you" instead on the track. That is why he lost the title last year.

  13. The thing that pushed Alonso was, I believe the fact that he was no longer certain of winning the WDC.
He went into that team in the belief that the title was his for the taking, and couldn't handle it when he saw it disappear.

From Mike, on Wed 15 Oct 5:12AM
  14. No matter which way I smell it, Alonso is just a sour grape! yes, Hamilton is aggressive, but only those who are not aggressive and don't have the "I want to win" mentality that will ultimately fail. So for this, I have to admire Hamilton, just like not matter how I hate Schumy, he never gave up and you know he would try whatever he could to win race, and I have utmost respect for him as a driver. I think Hamilton is a bit young and inexperince at the moment, may be a bit of hot head as well, but who could blame him when even a great F1 Champion like Schumy also made that silly and childish "stop in the middle of track" incident in Monaco! For one thing, Hamilton will not go as far and stupid as that to win race, so why don't anyone just let Hamilton race and do whatever a good driver will do, be aggressive and fair! So Hamilton, you go man! I wish you all the best for this year and hope you could win the driver;s championship and shut those people who loath you up!

  15. I am a die had Alonso fan. But I am not biased to him. He is really a fantastic driver but he should watch what he is sayingas a lot of times he comes out sound like a real jerk. Having said this though I think as fans of F1 we should calm down and not get to wrapped up with what the drivers say. They are all human and like us they say a lot of silly things which if they reflect back on will wish they could take back. let's not focus too much on the drivers and what they have to say, F1 should be more about the racing on the track. All the other aspects are just secondary.

From Gio, on Wed 15 Oct 4:14AM
  16. poshboy, Lewis disobeyed teams orders to allow Alonso to pass him during qualifying. Alonso added to the stupidity by extending his stay in the pits to try and destroy Lewis' chance at qualifying. McLaren didn't support Alonso as a 2 time world champion and Lewis became their Golden Boy. I'd give points to all in this game. The team lost control of it's drivers and then you start the in fighting. So, who are we going to blame. Sir Striling Moss was the number 2 to Fangio. He obeyed team orders. He always had class. If you disrespect a 2 time world champion you are disrespecting the sport. Clark, Fangio, Stewart, Surtees, Hill and many others had the respect of their peers. Alonso has lost some of his shine and Lewis never had it.

  17. what did LH did to to FA? answer: he beat him. that's why FA is so insecure to LH. he cannot believe that this young star (younger than him) is actually better than him. stay in renault you ***hole ferrari does not like you because you are a liability...^_^

  18. Forza: Alonso has to accept a huge amount of blame for the whole Mclaren debacle. There's no doubt that Lewis would have ben the prefered champion for them, not because he is British, but because he had been with the team for over ten years. He was their product as a racing driver. Lewis winning the title is reward for a decade of hardwork on their part. Alonso however had been treated like a king by Renault and moved to Mclaren expecting them to treat him as Ferrari had treated a certain German World Champion so many years ago. Schumi was the undisputed number 1, and despite a little favouritism, Mclaren wouldn't do that. They wouldn't make one of those two drivers their ultimate priority like Ferrari and Renault had done before, not when they were so evenly matched. And Alonso couldn't handle that because he expected them to order this rookie to let him win, that in itself is not the actions of the kind of professional a rookie should really want to learn from.

  19. Alonso did not go to Ron Dennis out of the blue. Something pushed him to do it. Why is that so hard to understand?

From Forza Ferrari, on Wed 15 Oct 12:35AM
  20. Raven, get your facts right. Alonso by his actions made his place within the team untenable. You can't go around threatening your own team to make him number one or he goes to the FIA with a 'smoking gun'.

Best driver or not, he's a liability as a person. Otherwise, why didn't Ferrari snap him up instead of renewing Kimi's contract?
