Alonso seeks to help topple Hamilton

Eurosport - Tue, 14 Oct 17:29:00 2008

Fernando Alonso has said he will do what he can to help Ferrari's Felipe Massa beat Lewis Hamilton to the Formula One title after winning the last two grands prix for Renault.

2008 Singaporean GP Renault McLaren Alonso Hamilton - 0

"Yes, without doubt. If I can help, I will help Massa," the double world champion told Spanish newspapers after Sunday's victory in Japan.

Alonso, whose win at Fuji came two weeks after his surprise triumph in Singapore, fell out with championship leader Hamilton in an ill-fated 2007 season alongside the Briton at McLaren.

The Spaniard, who has been persistently linked to an eventual move to Ferrari, could become a factor in this year's title showdown if he continues to challenge for the podium in the remaining two races.

The 27-year-old has now scored more points (35) than any other driver in the six races since the German Grand Prix in July. Hamilton has taken 26 and Massa 25 in the same period.

Hamilton is five points clear of Brazilian Massa, whose team-mate and world champion Kimi Raikkonen is now out of contention, with only this weekend's race in China and the season-ender in Brazil still to come.

Massa, a favourite to win his home race in Sao Paulo, ideally needs a Ferrari one-two in Shanghai with Alonso rounding out the podium to make the necessary inroads into Hamilton's tally.

BMW-Sauber's Robert Kubica is the third man left in the title hunt, 12 points off Hamilton - and before the race criticised the Briton's driving style.

Raikkonen returned to the podium on Sunday for the first time since Hungary in August, ending a run of four races without a point, but many Brazilians suspect he may not be Massa's strongest ally on the racetrack.

Alonso and resurgent Renault may be of more assistance.

"We are now maybe just behind Ferrari and McLaren and this is completely amazing," said the Spaniard, whose team were struggling just to score points at the start of the year.

In the same news conference at Fuji, his enduring hostility towards McLaren and Hamilton was evident when the top three drivers were asked whether it was right for the Briton to have been handed a drive-through penalty for his start.

"I agree," Alonso said immediately, while Kubica and Raikkonen both said they did not have a clear enough picture to comment.

"I don't know what he did," the race winner said later. "But it's good he's punished anyway."

  1. Forza, I agree totally but I will add, as I have said before that, had Hamilton served as an apprentice to Alonso for a year, a number of things would have happened: First, Fernando would have won his third consecutive championship, McLaren would have had both championships, and, most important of all, Hamilton would have had the opportinuity to learn from a double world champion,. (A double champion by the way who still has more to come). But Hamilton, McLaren, or perhaps both, concluded that Hamilton had nothing left to learn, even from a double world champ, and they elected to push him, rather than Alonso, for the title.
And what McLaren lost is easy to understand, the TITLE.
More importantly, they lost two other things; They lost the best driver in F1, and, as I think time will tell, they lost the ability to develop their No. 2 driver into becoming a dominating force in F1.
At one point, I really did believe that Hamilton had whatever it takes to be one of the greatest of all time, I still think that had he accepted a years apprenticeship under Fernado, he migh well have made it to the upper reaches of F1, but now?, Nah, he might win one or two, great achievments in and of themselves, but is he likely to become one of the all time greats?....With Fernando's help, that might have been, but right now, the answer is clearly "No Way Jose"..

  2. Alonso may be a kid, but a big one;one that doesn't need to have his mommy and daddy with him in the garage at all times. What's up with that? Since when are parents part of the team, hi fiving the engineers??? Fathers hugging fathers in the pit lane, what the hell?
I don't remember Senna's mother or Prost's father at any race. I can understand an occasional girlfriend or wife.
Are they whatching their kid to make sure he ain't gonna pick up smoking or something? ridiculous and embarassing

  3. Let me tell you one thing about Alonso's situation at McLaren last year. Where there is smoke, there is fire. Was Alonso right in expecting preferential treatment when he joined McLaren? Absolutely. Why did McLaren sign him? Because he was the defending two-time champion. As such, he deserved maximum support. He "earned" that respect through his performance at Renault.

However, once that McLaren realized that Lewis had a real shot at the title, they focused on him. A young "British" driver is much more marketable for a British team than a Spanish driver. Ron Dennis also knew that Lewis would stay with them for the long run.

Alonso probably did not handle the situation like a world champion should, but I can't see him making such a fuss unless he had a really good reason to do it. He's not stupid. He knew that there would be consequences, especially concerning his image and reputation. And don't tell me that he cracked under the pressure of Lewis. This guy won two titles under extreme pressure from the best driver of all time (Schumi). I think that he could handle Lewis just fine. However, if he was not getting the same treatment as Lewis, I definitely understand his reaction.

In spite of Ron Dennis' claims of "equal treatment", DC and Prost, among others, have mentioned that this was not always true. I am inclined to believe them. I also believe Alonso. You can hate him all you want, but the bottom line is that Alonso has 2 titles and Lewis 0.

  4. let's see here, Massa and ferrari are just gonna drive all over the road these last two races because they know that all they will get is a pathetic drive through, Massa should have been pentalised 10 grid spots for china, 5 for deliberately hitting lewis, and 5 for driving right into bourdais. lewis passed him and massa was pissed so he figured he mine as well just hit him, and bourdais had no more room on the track, massa just ran right into him. i hope lewis wins the championship just so that he can that cheaters never prosper to ferrari and the FIA ( Ferrari International Allegations by the way).

  5. It's Hamilton's sickly sweet almost robotic analysis of himself that does my nut in. We the team are so great blah... blah blah.... I think all his answers are scripted. He has talent no doubt, he'll never beat Schumi's records and never be loved as much as Ayrton...

  6. To "R": That Kid, as you call him, has still outscored all the other drivers in the last few races and did after all beat the best of them all in order to win back to back championships. As well, he is within a couple of points of the other McLaren driver and we need to remember that Fernando is driving a Renault, not a Ferrari or a Mclaren. Ergo, regardless of your personal feelings, the facts speak for themselves. And the facts tell us that Fernado is back, and, that the rest of the field need to look out in the next two races because he will be out to win both.

  7. That kid Alonso still has hate in him, and I still think he cannot get over the fact that LH whipped his a$$ in his first year in F1. That shows a disturbed character, and it wouldn't surprise me if FA goes to bed every night crying bitter words of revenge for making him, the World Champion, look foolish. Now he speaketh......

  8. I just read the Spanish press. Alonso said he prefers Ferrari to win over McLaren after what happened last year, and if he can help, he will help Massa.

I don't understand why some people see something wrong in these comments, he is just speaking up about his feelings after all the problems he had last year when McLaren lost the championship for allowing their 2 drivers to fight between them instead of giving Alonso the deservedly status of 1st driver after 2 championships in a row.

    I wish Kubica wins ;-)

Nobody needs to put Hamilton out of the race. He has confirmed several times he can do it himself.

  10. alonso is not a team player, he showed that last year when he realised hamilton was faster than him. he did all he could to sabotage maclaren and lewis since he could not be the #1 driver (making his teamate miss q3 final lap, costing mclaren all thier points and a huge fine etc) sure he can drive...but the fact is he is a driver that is not to be trusted in his loyaltiy. All teams are aware of this...but honda is just really desparate. Ferarri does not want him....nobody but honda does...and honda is the worst car in f1.

  14. Like it or not, there are more drivers on the grid that would like to help Hamilton lose than there are drivers that would like to help him win. With his "I Own The Track" attitude, he has peed off most of the other guys and although I don't think for a moment that any of them would take him out deliberately, I have no doubt that they will make it very difficult for him to succeed whilst making it much easier for his competitors to win. Schui learned the hard way what happens when all the other drivers are peed off at you. To his credit, Schui got the message and became the best ever. Whilst Hamilton may well go on to win a title or two, there is no way that he will achieve that level of success.
