World Cup qual. - Terry and Cole out of Belarus trip

Eurosport - Tue, 14 Oct 09:48:00 2008

England manager Fabio Capello has a selection headache after John Terry and Ashley Cole were ruled out of the World Cup qualifier against Belarus on Wednesday.

2008 England John Terry Ashley Cole - 0

The Chelsea defenders are both injured - Terry with a long-standing back injury and Cole with a hamstring complaint.

Neither man will travel to Minsk with the squad on Tuesday, and will return to their club.

"It's disappointing to lose two very experienced players in John Terry and Ashley Cole for the game in Belarus," said Capello.

"Unfortunately they have no chance of playing, so it is best they return to Chelsea."

Cole was booed by the Wembley crowd during England's 5-1 win against Kazakhstan on Saturday after an error that led to the visitors' goal. He completed 90 minutes and showed no sign of injury.

His absence will surely lead conspiracy theorists to suggest that Capello has withdrawn the left-back to protect him from further abuse.

Cole's Chelsea colleague Wayne Bridge is expected to deputise, although Everton's Joleon Lescott is another option to play left-back.

Rio Ferdinand will continue to captain the side in Terry's absence, having done so against Kazakhstan.

Terry performed light training and gym work on Sunday but failed to come through rigorous tests on Monday morning.

Capello has hinted that Terry's absence could lead him to continue to deploy Gareth Barry as a holding midfielder.

Speaking after Saturday's game, Capello said: "I have time to decide whether to play a holding midfielder in Belarus. First we have to wait and see whether John Terry will play, then we will decide about the midfield.''

England lacked cohesion and drive in the first half with Barry, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in a three-man midfield.

They registered a marked improvement following a half-time switch to 4-4-2 that saw Shaun Wright-Phillips come on for Barry.

England are top of Group 6 after winning their first three games. Belarus are fourth having played one game fewer. They lost 1-0 away to Ukraine, before winning 3-1 in Andorra.

  1. I'm actually glad that ashley cole isn't playing because he's very insecure for his position at left back. for john terry, it's dissapointing to get injured again and England have lot to lose if he's gone. He'll be back and compete in no time.

  7. England fans are a joke all you see are digs at Chelsea players from all fans other than Chelsea fans, digs at man u players from all fans of clubs other than Man U digs at liverpool players from all but Liverpool fans and the same with other clubs. The fans create the anti club feeling which must filter through to the players and keep the club rivalery formost in player minds. If your fans dropped the interclub rivalry when your national shirt was put on then your national team made from individual clubs could forget their rivalry and start playing together as a team and not as individuals. Only then would we the fans of other nations have something to fear. You have the greatest players but you are so club predjudice that you will never allow your players to get it together for internationals. It is the supporters who are the joke keep it up and you will continue your lack of sucess. For which we of othernationalities are grateful!!!

  8. Sappercommando you prat.
Firstly its not Soccer its football, only game where primarily kick the ball with your foot.
Secondly your claim that our group is easy and its an easy way to the World Cup, vastly disrespectful to the other nations in our group, at attitude expected by a Frenchmen, arrogance, shock.
Thirdly I think your comments about the English league and our average English players, is that jealousy because your own national players want to live in England???? Are you sure Rooney, Terry, Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand and co are average, I dont agree we have in the past lacked the tactical side of the game never the ability.
In all reading what you have put on here is laughable your lack of knowledge on the English game domestically and nationally leads me to believe you must really be a Rugby fan, go throw an egg.

  9. How can you drop a player whose overall game is a little better than Lampards, Lampard against Croatia had his best game for England as most games he normally shoots from 30 odd yards and he his best when he is running into the pen.area recieving a pass yet he do not do it enough for England and yet we have one player that does both these things in games and is a lot more accurate than Frank from long range, sure Gerrard did not have a good game last weekend but neither did anyone else but what I do agree with you on is Capello can only play one and for me it's Gerrard, just.....

It always amuses me how people like you go on and on about history and glorious goals. What is the point of all these "glorious" goals when at the end of the day, there is nothing to show for them. We live in the present, not the past like you so get real you dense British idiot.

  16. To vuduedaddy,
It is true that foreign players have largely taken up the places meant for the home grown players and this has blighted any young talent out there but it doesn't help when these foreign players are not only endorsed but also glorified. This puts a damper on the enthusiasm of any English player.
The bottom line is that England have had too many players in the wrong places for far too long and they have now resigned themselves to club soccer where they are highly regarded. The English are not interested in the international arena now as they have realised that they are just averages.

    From sappercommando25, on Tue 14 Oct 4:11AM
  17. i would say as long as you keep buying foreign players from other countries the home grown talent will not get better and that is why you always see the same old names. If they have played so long together why can't they play together. At least you see a little effort and enthusiasm from the Brown and Walcot. Too bad the rest of the team doesn't play like that.

  18. Another problem is with the general attitide of the English public, especially the Soccer Supporters. They only have loyalty to their players when the team win but the moment the national side is on the losing end of the stick, the tables turn for the worse. I have been a witness to this on a number of occasions notably when the Portugese dumped the English out of the World Cup 2006 by virtue of penalties. Suddenly the English players went from being heroes to vilans with the shortest space of time. And an overwhelming majority of those in that packed out nightclub/pub were by no means real Supporters of the game or their country. One day, when they had nothing to do (as usual) the people decided to sport English shirts and become supporters. What a joke that nation is.
That is one thing that always amuses me, how they run around in soccer shirts and are on the other hand so average at the game :-)

    From sappercommando25, on Tue 14 Oct 2:23AM
  19. One of the major hangups in English national soccer is that management have the habit of listing the same old names with the usual predictable results. Now of course England shall qualify as they have no realistic opposition in their Group at all. Apart from that their nemisis Croatia is not firing on all cylinders. So England not qualifying for the 2010 Cup is not even in the wildest of dreams. The problem with their group is that the English get far too used to pounding easy opposition like Kazachstan, so, when they eventually lock horns with the likes of the French, the result is the usual sour grapes with the pitch to blame or something ridiculous like that. (Remember the Penalty Shoot out with I think Portugal in 2006)
In order to have any chance of realistically winning anything at all, the English have to put in those performances against REAL opposition. It is exactly this that the English consistently don't do and this is why they are just a bunch of averages in the international arena. As I have said in previous comments on here, until the English win the Euro, they can forget about any World Cup. The English are neither good nor bad at soccer....they are just average, or more accurately said, they have put themselves content with being average even though they would be capable of more.
Being in easy Groups in the qualifiers tends to bring out the worst in them but the problem is that this has become a habit with the English. Topping such groups also leads to the media and the naive general soccer fans overhyping the players so when the English players don't produce, this has severe negative effects and as usual the manager gets the boot.
