World Cup qual. - Terry and Cole out of Belarus trip

Eurosport - Tue, 14 Oct 09:48:00 2008

England manager Fabio Capello has a selection headache after John Terry and Ashley Cole were ruled out of the World Cup qualifier against Belarus on Wednesday.

2008 England John Terry Ashley Cole - 0

The Chelsea defenders are both injured - Terry with a long-standing back injury and Cole with a hamstring complaint.

Neither man will travel to Minsk with the squad on Tuesday, and will return to their club.

"It's disappointing to lose two very experienced players in John Terry and Ashley Cole for the game in Belarus," said Capello.

"Unfortunately they have no chance of playing, so it is best they return to Chelsea."

Cole was booed by the Wembley crowd during England's 5-1 win against Kazakhstan on Saturday after an error that led to the visitors' goal. He completed 90 minutes and showed no sign of injury.

His absence will surely lead conspiracy theorists to suggest that Capello has withdrawn the left-back to protect him from further abuse.

Cole's Chelsea colleague Wayne Bridge is expected to deputise, although Everton's Joleon Lescott is another option to play left-back.

Rio Ferdinand will continue to captain the side in Terry's absence, having done so against Kazakhstan.

Terry performed light training and gym work on Sunday but failed to come through rigorous tests on Monday morning.

Capello has hinted that Terry's absence could lead him to continue to deploy Gareth Barry as a holding midfielder.

Speaking after Saturday's game, Capello said: "I have time to decide whether to play a holding midfielder in Belarus. First we have to wait and see whether John Terry will play, then we will decide about the midfield.''

England lacked cohesion and drive in the first half with Barry, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in a three-man midfield.

They registered a marked improvement following a half-time switch to 4-4-2 that saw Shaun Wright-Phillips come on for Barry.

England are top of Group 6 after winning their first three games. Belarus are fourth having played one game fewer. They lost 1-0 away to Ukraine, before winning 3-1 in Andorra.

  1. its never a glass half full is it, deary me come on people, we have pulled results out of these apparently not so good performances, England can still come good with a better team yet, lets look to be positive and I think its fair to say if a player like Cole errors he has the mentality and commitment to make it up, he has been one of Englands better servants over the years in general. A clean sheet would have looked solid but we still won by a few and its a good sign if you csn grind results like that when we dont look fully equipped just yet.

I would like to see J Cole get a game again soon he does a job on the left and maybe risk not playing the big holding player like Heskey up with Rooney for J Cole on the left, Walcott and S Wr philips subbing combo on the right and also involve Barry in a subbing rotation of the Gerrard Lampard saga either start him and then bring Lampard on for a stretch fresh if its not working with gerrard/barry mixing it up or Gerrard/Lampard start with Walcott making the runs in . There is enough to kill Belarus off surely even if they sound a physical organised side.

We arent ready for Owen till he shows real rejuvenation yet, i think others are more in form but wouldnt rule him out for sometime in the future.

Whats the views of sensible people on S Wr Philips on the left in J Coles absence?

  4. I bet Cole is not injured much. They are scared of what reception he might get in Belarus as he is probably not liked anywhere anymore apart from Stamford Bridge. He is not much good anyway. Better off bringing Ray Wilson out of retirement because he was the best ever. I am not an Everton or Chelsea supporter by the way, I am neutral.

  5. I agree with Rick Hudson - give me an honest tryer any day rather than a self-opiniated, lout who thinks he is above criticism and "mis-understood".

  7. Great result for England that Cole is apparently injured.

We don't need tossers like him in the England team.

    Idle, arrogant, p***k. Good riddance.

Lescott will probably run his legs off so at least we'll get the commitment needed to wear the shirt!!!

  13. Let's face it, sticking 6 past Scotland does not mean they are any good. For goodness sake we are talking about Scotland here!!! Right. My local school team could stick 6 past Scotland, even today, never mind 3 years when Scotland were c r a p. They still are. The school could stick 6 past them, even leaving Scotland on the pitch still playing at the same time as the school kids took a break for orange juice and sandwiches.

  14. Michael O, you totally prove that people on this message talk c r a p, and are full of it. Capello did not say Owen was left out because he is not playing 90 minutes every game and coming on as a sub. He very clearly said, and it is on this and other web sites all over the world, that Owen is playing in a team that is losing games, at the bottom of the Premier league etc etc, and that is no preparation for a player to come into the national team with as his confidence will not be at it's best. If he is right or wrong is not the issue. The issue is what he actually said, and that's what he said. That is completely different to what you said he said. Which proves that bias makes you hear what you want to hear and not what is actually said. And most messages on here are based on bias or stupidity. No facts or common sense applies

  15. Is there such a thing as a "comfortable" England victory?

Judging by the @#$% the team are getting for only winning 5-1 I think not.....
