Mixed Surface For The Next Rally Sanremo?

Wed, 14 Oct 15:51:10 2009

The next edition of Rally Sanremo might very well be a mixed-surface event featuring asphalt and gravel.

The organisers of the IRC's Italian round have submitted such a proposal to the country's national motorsports association (CSAI), and if the scenario takes place in 2010, it will be a first for the Intercontinental Rally Challenge series.

In the past, the Sanremo held stages on asphalt and gravel, but since its involvement with the IRC began in 2006, it has been a sealed-surface-only event.

If the CSAI accepts the proposition, the 52nd edition of Rally Sanremo will count gravel stages in Tuscany in addition to asphalt tests in the Sanremo region.

"We have spoken to several teams involved in the IRC championship and I had the impression that they approved the idea," said Sergio Maiga, President of the Sanremo Automobile Club.

  1. This is the way ALL rally's should be. Evens up the odds for everyone and I think it would not only be a great spectacle for the punters but also great fun for the drivers - though their mechanics will have their work cut out.
