Leinster flanker Jennings suspended for gouging

DUBLIN (AFP) - Leinster flanker Shane Jennings was on Wednesday suspended until January 6 after he was found guilty of eye-gouging London Irish lock Nick Kennedy in a European Cup tie.

Jennings was cited after the defending champions lost 12-9 in their Cup opener last Friday.

An ERC disciplinary hearing found Jennings was guilty of an action "contrary to good sportsmanship in that he made contact with the eye or eye area of Nick Kennedy".

Judicial officer Roger Morris from Wales ruled Jennings be banned until January 6 though he has the right to appeal.

Leinster said they were surprised and extremely disappointed with the ruling.

"The ERC Disciplinary Committee appears to have found that Shane Jennings was careless with his actions, which is a shock to us. Shane has an impeccable record and a strong leadership role within the squad as our vice captain and we will be appealing this decision," said a Leinster statement.

"Leinster Rugby will not be commenting further until after the written report which will ?be issued as soon as is reasonably practicable? according to the ERC rules."
