Stalker keeping feet on ground ahead of ABA finals

The 24-year-old takes on defending champion Martin Stead of the Army at Friday's senior ABA finals at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield in the 60kg category.

The St Aloysius ABC ace has already underlined his potential, having been hand-picked as part of Great Britain's elite squad, which groups together London 2012 hopefuls.

But Stalker, who saw off Danny Phillips and Josh Warrington en route to the final, is refusing to get carried and pledged to never forget his roots.

"I want to win it for my club. I could not enter last year because of the Olympic qualifiers but asked to go in them this year - I would be over the moon if I won," he said.

"But Martin Stead won it last year, has been around for years.

"A lot can happen in three years ahead of London 2012 - there are a lot of competitions so I am just going to take every step as it comes.

"I am number one in Great Britain but next year that could change, boxing is mad. I will just keep working hard."

Meanwhile 17-year-old Gamal Yafai - younger brother of Beijing Olympic Khalid Yafai - will also be going for gold in Sheffield, looking to follow in the footsteps of his older brother.

Former world junior champion Khalid won the national title in his only outing in the championships, also aged 17, but has stepped down to allow Gamal his shot at glory.

Gamal will square off against Adam Whitfield of the Army, and coach Frank O'Sullivan is tipping Yafai junior to join his older sibling at London 2012.

"Both Khalid and Gamal are real 2012 candidates and I would expect them not only to make history by being the first pair of British brothers to box at a Games but also to come back with medals," he said.

Elsewhere, Vauxhall Motors heavyweight Wayne Adeniyi will also battle it out for an ABA crown when he takes on Robert Evans (Banbury) at 86kg.

And Kirk Garvey, having defeated Anthony Ogogo in the semis, takes on Hosea Burton at 75kg while veteran Darran Langley meets defending champion Tommy Stubbs at light-flyweight.

Great Britain head coach Kevin Hickey said: "There are definitely some exciting prospects out there and we will be looking for the ABA finals to confirm some of the talent we have already spotted."
