Championship - View from the Terraces: Derby

Eurosport - Fri, 14 Nov 16:25:00 2008

Our man in the know at Pride Park expresses his doubts over the long-term suitability of Paul Jewell for the Derby manager's job.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Championship - Paul Jewell, Derby manager - 0

What do you think of the manager? Is there anyone (realistic) out there who would do a better job?

Paul Jewell is starting to show us that he can get wins. However I believe that as a manager he is still not good enough to keep us in the Premier League, should we get there. At this stage he is showing us that perhaps we can get promoted, but it's unlikely. There were rumours that Alan Curbishley would come to our club and do a better job, but he would cost a lot more money.

Who is the best player you've seen playing for another team this season - and who do you fear losing in January?

I would have to say Stephen Hunt for Reading, but we have no chance of getting him. I fear we will lose Giles Barnes and/or Miles Addison.

What was your first match or oldest memory of the club?

I first noticed Derby when Paulo Wanchope was playing for them probably 10 years ago. I think he scored a double over Manchester United, one of the goals was a superb solo effort, which impresses any youngster.

Are you happy with the present hierarchy at the club? Would you prefer a foreign owner or someone from closer to home?

Well the current owners have money, which is what we need at the moment. At the moment I think our ownership is the least of our worries.

What is the relationship like between the club and the fans? Are ticket prices fair?

There is a slight division amongst the fans at the moment. Half believe that Paul Jewell is the man to solidify us in the Premier League. The other half disagree with a lot of his transfer decisions and think that he should be replaced by a different manager, one who will put the club in the top tier of English football. The ticket prices are not bad at all; the Forest tickets cost £28, which is very reasonable considering it's the second most competitive and passionate derby in the UK (Swansea v Cardiff is first, I think). The reasonable ticket prices are responsible for the high attendance figures: each week over 10 per cent of the population of Derby are inside the stadium.

  1. I agree with what he said... He is by no means a premier league manager... if you think he is you have no idea about football... look at wigan... bruce took over and now they are great... he can promote clubs, thats what he does... doesnt keep them up there. Im a season ticket holder and i agree with him on everything apart from Whanchope, Paulo had no solid strength on the field, most matches it was like he was never there.
