Torres will choose medals before goals

Fri 14 Dec, 12:15 PM

Liverpool frontman Fernando Torres says he would rather win medals than top the goalscoring charts this season. The Spanish hitman has netted 12 times for the Reds since his summer move from Atletico Madrid, putting him joint second with Robbie Keane behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

But as he prepares to lock horns with Manchester United on Sunday, 'El Nino' says team success is more important than personal glory.

He told the club's official website: "A team success will always be more important than any individual prize or award, though it is often true that the side which wins the league also has the league's top goalscorer in its team.

"I have to admit that it would be really nice to finish up as the top goalscorer, but it is more important that Liverpool do really well this season."

Torres has settled in quickly on Merseyside, and gives a lot of the credit for that to his Anfield team-mates.

He added: "All my team-mates have treated me really well. Everyone has been great from day one.

"For example, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have sent me messages to my phone welcoming me to the club.

"Also all the people who work at the club, I would like to thank them all for their time and help.

"And Pepe Reina and Xabi Alonso have been helping me out with any problems or doubts that I may have understanding the language."
