Hamilton receives winner's trophy

Lewis Hamilton was awarded his trophy as Formula One's youngest champion at the International Automobile Federation gala awards dinner, and admitted he had fulfilled a childhood dream.

"This year has been a very special one in my life, the fulfilment of a dream I've had since childhood and an ambition that has taken my family and me on an amazing journey," said the 23-year-old Briton (pictured with his family).

"The fact that I won the drivers' world championship on the very last lap of the very last race is something that makes me so proud of our efforts in 2008," added the sport's first black champion.

"We pushed to the limit on every lap, from Melbourne to Brazil, and it's that determination and spirit that ultimately won us the world title."

Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa, beaten by a single point after winning his home race last month, celebrated his team's constructors' crown and saw his own achievements in a positive light.

"We are already looking to a new season and I will do my utmost to come back here to Monaco next year to claim the prize which today has gone to Lewis," he said.

Singapore, host of Formula One's first night grand prix this year, was awarded the race promoters' trophy.

  1. Lewis Hamilton is guilty of the same crime as Jenson­ and DC, yet you Touronroute only choose to have a go at­ Lewis Hamilton.
    That is racism as I see it.
    DC and­ Jenson also have family dependent on the NHS here yet­ you only choose Lewis as your focal point.
    About you­ not being racist here is an example Nick Griffin­ occasionally goes to visit Gadaffi yet he is a leader­ of a party that wants all Jews, Black, Muslim and other­ people not WHITE out of Britain.

    Lewis Hamilton is not responsible for­ paying taxes to cover his families NHS bill when they­ infact are resident here and still paying taxes to­ cover their own bills.

  19. The trouble is touronroute that your spelling and­ punctuation are not very good so it is very difficult­ to work out what you are trying to say. In the same­ sentence you said "the family is getting about­ £10,000 per pound per week in services" and­ "i quoted de la rosa" and somewhere in­ between you wrote a load of 'mmmmmmmmmmm'. Take­ a bit more time, use some basic English grammar and we­ might understand you better.
