Lewis Hamilton was awarded his trophy as Formula One's youngest champion at the International Automobile Federation gala awards dinner, and admitted he had fulfilled a childhood dream.
"This year has been a very special one in my life, the fulfilment of a dream I've had since childhood and an ambition that has taken my family and me on an amazing journey," said the 23-year-old Briton (pictured with his family).
"The fact that I won the drivers' world championship on the very last lap of the very last race is something that makes me so proud of our efforts in 2008," added the sport's first black champion.
"We pushed to the limit on every lap, from Melbourne to Brazil, and it's that determination and spirit that ultimately won us the world title."
Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa, beaten by a single point after winning his home race last month, celebrated his team's constructors' crown and saw his own achievements in a positive light.
"We are already looking to a new season and I will do my utmost to come back here to Monaco next year to claim the prize which today has gone to Lewis," he said.
Singapore, host of Formula One's first night grand prix this year, was awarded the race promoters' trophy.

touronroute is a piece of s@?t well LEWIS HAMILTON is the F1 CHAMPION 2008 did you get that or should i repeat it again for you LEWIS HAMILTON the FI CHAMPION 2008 nothing you say or do is going to change that,so if i were you i would GET A LIFE YOU P**K ,PU*K A*S B*TCH??
Touronroute - as I have said many times before I always like to check my facts. Now that you have responded to confirm your allegiance I wonder how you can make a comment about "the true great britians are still here flying our flag." when you support an Italian team with drivers from Brazil and Finland that has very little British input. I have no problems with your support of that team but just wish you could be more honest and consistent when trying to put down other people. Lewis' success has brought extra tax revenue to this country whether he lives here or not. You say that you support an Italian team. If they get the success you wish for you are hoping that teams based in Great Britain fail and thus less tax revenue comes into the UK. I take it that you do not count yourself as a 'true britian' (your spelling!) based on your own criteria and your own actions.
Voodoopenguin. and if i was the best loved and thought of, i wouldn't spend millions in mail and correspondence ,trying to get a medal i didn't deserve. BBC, SP///////. ?? TH? ???R
Voodoopenguin, the team i support is ferrari, why , because i have met all their teams and drivers , many times, and have never been turned away.
VOODOOPENGUIN, you not that slow, to not know the answers to your questions.
Touronroute - What tab (your word) is being picked up by others at the moment? Lewis' success has reaped huge benefits for the taxman here in the UK even though he chooses to live in another country.
Touronroute - Maybe I should ask which team you support, which driver you support and which country you support. Or even, based on your answers to those questions, which flag you fly.
BARRY WW if you rearly cant work out what mucky laren did let me explane reguardless of where it may have come from nobody at mucky laran shouls have accepted it, looked at it, OR used it.
BUT THEY DID SO THAT MAKES THEM CHEATS
Now maybe that will help you to understand although I doubt it.
So to quote the thing that Mario from Peru (or wherever)has said so often MCLAREN HANG YOUR HEADS IN SHAME
F1junky1000, explain i can, whats its doing for lewis family, a great deal, i wouldn't expect to leave my family in a sinking ship, and expect others to pick up the tab,the true great britians are still here flying our flag.
Touronroute, explain what the NHS is doing for Lewis Hamilton right now?
or is your blinkered attitude getting the better of your senses?
well done lewis
Article 51) I read loyalty, loyalty is where you look after your own 24 hrs a day, paying your taxes, not getting the N,H,S footing the bill.
qeli76,
You also must try to be objective in your criticism.
mitresvski made comments based on someones skin colour and You qeli76 seem to let that slide but seemingly like a senseless dog on a bone you seem to hang on to Guy.
Yes Guy was wrong in what he said but compared to mitresvski, it was nothing.
Am I wrong in assuming that maybe you share the same view as mitresvski and that is why you only take offence with Guy?
Guy,
I guess you missed what I wanted to say to you. You can hate that mitresvski or whatever his name was, but do it in the right way, you p@#$y guy. Must be proud of yourself ha. now go and spend the rest of the day in a better way rather than trying to play smart as* here. cheers
mclaren stealers, cheers!!!
who's this never y....he's a right nob jockey
Well Done Lewis on your award (that is what this article is about right?) And best of luck for tomorrow's BBC Sports Personality of the Year - you not only deserve it for your talent, perseverance and loyalty, but also for putting up with the strange creatures that come out of the depths of the human psyche and spit out their venom. Oh, and a Happy Christmas to Everybody !!!!
never y , You need to get a life . You also need to brush up on your F-1 history , McLaren did not steal ANYTHING .A disgruntled employee at Ferrari stole the data and gave it to one employee at McLaren .
martin.mite post #5 please tell what cheating McLaren did this year .
f1junky1000
