Lewis Hamilton was awarded his trophy as Formula One's youngest champion at the International Automobile Federation gala awards dinner, and admitted he had fulfilled a childhood dream.

"This year has been a very special one in my life, the fulfilment of a dream I've had since childhood and an ambition that has taken my family and me on an amazing journey," said the 23-year-old Briton (pictured with his family).

"The fact that I won the drivers' world championship on the very last lap of the very last race is something that makes me so proud of our efforts in 2008," added the sport's first black champion.

"We pushed to the limit on every lap, from Melbourne to Brazil, and it's that determination and spirit that ultimately won us the world title."

Ferrari's Brazilian Felipe Massa, beaten by a single point after winning his home race last month, celebrated his team's constructors' crown and saw his own achievements in a positive light.

"We are already looking to a new season and I will do my utmost to come back here to Monaco next year to claim the prize which today has gone to Lewis," he said.

Singapore, host of Formula One's first night grand prix this year, was awarded the race promoters' trophy.

  2. Touronroute - as I have said many times before I always like to check my facts. Now that you have responded to confirm your allegiance I wonder how you can make a comment about "the true great britians are still here flying our flag." when you support an Italian team with drivers from Brazil and Finland that has very little British input. I have no problems with your support of that team but just wish you could be more honest and consistent when trying to put down other people. Lewis' success has brought extra tax revenue to this country whether he lives here or not. You say that you support an Italian team. If they get the success you wish for you are hoping that teams based in Great Britain fail and thus less tax revenue comes into the UK. I take it that you do not count yourself as a 'true britian' (your spelling!) based on your own criteria and your own actions.

  6. Touronroute - What tab (your word) is being picked up by others at the moment? Lewis' success has reaped huge benefits for the taxman here in the UK even though he chooses to live in another country.

From Grey Scale, on Sun 14 Dec 11:01AM
  7. Touronroute - Maybe I should ask which team you support, which driver you support and which country you support. Or even, based on your answers to those questions, which flag you fly.

  13. qeli76,
You also must try to be objective in your criticism.
mitresvski made comments based on someones skin colour and You qeli76 seem to let that slide but seemingly like a senseless dog on a bone you seem to hang on to Guy.
Yes Guy was wrong in what he said but compared to mitresvski, it was nothing.
Am I wrong in assuming that maybe you share the same view as mitresvski and that is why you only take offence with Guy?

    From f1junky1000, on Sun 14 Dec 8:05AM
