Bradford, who guided the Sooners to next month's national championship game, beat out Colt McCoy of the University of Texas and 2007 Heisman winner Tim Tebow of the University of Florida for the honour. All three are quarterbacks.

"I was definitely surprised," Bradford said after receiving the trophy.

"I think it is everything you probably imagine but I think it is going to take a couple of weeks to soak it all in."

Bradford, who leads college football's top division in touchdown passes and passing efficiency, received 1,726 points in voting by a national panel. McCoy was second with 1,604 and Tebow third with 1,575.

Bradford's high-scoring Oklahoma team will meet Tebow's Florida Gators in the national title game on January 8 in Miami.

Both teams have a 12-1 record.
