Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has gone back into hospital for a third operation on kidney stones, leaving assistant Sammy Lee in charge of the Premier League leaders.
Lee said he hoped the Spaniard would be back in time for the two derby matches against Merseyside rivals Everton.
"It's a difficult time for him because you know Rafa Benitez, all he wants to do is be out there on the training pitch with his players," Lee told the club's website.
"He's going for the third operation but we're hoping it won't keep him out for too long, hopefully just a couple of days."
Liverpool host the Toffees in the league on Monday January 19 before the teams return to Anfield for their FA Cup fourth-round tie six days later.

cherylmatthews, cause he is a human being you stupid @#$%
Let's play the loony tunes, his flipped
Rafas a funny bloke, well he makes me laugh, but the bottom line is he's trying to do a job and he's seen that the mind games have done SAF proud over the last couple of decades so he's right to have a go himself. Nontheless, football is not as important as good health so all the best Rafa, get well soon, from a solid United fan.
i seen alex visiting a witch doctor in moss side!!.....
Get well soon Rafa.
I watched a programme on TV the other week about the Munich air disaster, and even though I hate United, whilst watching that programme football took a back seat.
It is shamefull some of the things that are been said here tonight. The man is only doing his job, it may be with a rivial club but still he still has to work to make money to provide for his family.
I have been a united fan all my life but i wud never wish death to anybody, there is enough suffering in this world without anymore. Im also a supported of football n that is more important, than all this stupid binkering that goes on. Im sure that if AF bcame ill that there would be the decent football supports from rival clubs that would come out and give his support n best wishes to get better again.
Hope you get well soon rafa and that you can continue one of the best PL that we've had in ages.
Disgusting stuff on here tonight. We all have a go at managers and their selections and the way they try to manipulate things but it is only light hearted for the vast majority of us. Some of the comments in recent weeks have been dark and menacing. You people need to grow up and remember that Shankly was joking when he said football is more important than life. It is not, it is a game. If you can tear yourself away from the PC for just 5 minutes go and have a look what is happening in Gaza with innocent children killed or injured and covered in blood. I am sure any of them would have welcomed the chance to watch a football match in a country of peace. Good luck Rafa mate and I hope this operation is totally successful so you can resume the duties you love
Rafa Benitez liked by Liverpool fans but hated by other football supporters
If Rafa left Liverpool and went into a rival team he would be hated from Liverpool fans but liked by other football fans.
We should like or hate a person by his personality not by his apearence or anything else.
To be honest we all know this in our minds but a minority of people listen to their minds.
does he still hook up with those ta ll beauties on the ta ll da ting site ____T a l lM in gl e Co m____ ???The last time I saw his profile is last monday, hope he does not leave.
After last weeks vitriolic diatribe against the greatest manager ever ( and I include that silly old F ART shankley) who gives a @#$% about him. Sod off back to spain as soon as you get rid of your stones @#$%.
taffygriff your a tit
hope he gets well soon - but I hear its now been diagnosed not as kidney stones but due to the vast amount of humble pie he has had to eat after the weekend....this is fact not opinion :)
Keith R not all everyone who supports Liverpool are like that ya know so less of the sarcasm please. Liverpool the most successful team in English football for the title. Get well soon Rafa
YNWA *****
maybe SIR alexs voodoo doll really works...lol
Arsenal fan wishing him well.
achunkyjones - Like every clubs fans, some ruin it for themselves and others. But there are still true supporters out there no matter what team they support. Pity you get most of the idiots on here spouting garbage instead of getting more real football fans.
united till i die
sounds like liverpools old boss every time thay get a bit of pressure on them thay become ill....your last boss had about 11 heart attacks didnt he..........so that wen u slip into 2nd then 3rd he can blame it on his health..sorry but the truth hurts as thay say...but anyway get well soon...
slivatree - It had to be said. Just getting a bit sick of the rivalry between clubs getting out of hand. Singing and cheering for your team is one thing but it's begining to get out of hand when people want others to die. Its a sport that you are supposed to be able to involve your family in, take the kids to watch their idols, not listen to some morons spouting how they want the oppositions manager to die. What kind of example is that to set to your kids?? No wonder kids now, turn into thugs. Think aout it people.
United til I die
urban knight. i am glad to read your comment and not tarring all, good to see decent people on here like you
Get well soon from all real supporters. MUFC for the title.
