Southend have finally signed striker James Walker from Charlton - initially on loan though a permanent deal may follow in the summer.The 20-year-old had agreed a £200,000 move to Roots Hall in January only for the deal to collapse when abnormalities with his heart were discovered.

They were the result of a long-standing condition which Walker was aware of, but Southend pulled out of the deal and sent him for further medical tests.

Following a month of monitoring, Walker has been given the all-clear to continue his football career and has now joined the Shrimpers on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent deal in the summer.
