Cerny Fears For Final Place

Fri 15 Feb, 07:09 PM

Radek Cerny's blunder in Prague has left the Tottenham goalkeeper fearing for his place in the team ahead of the Carling Cup final against Chelsea next weekend.

Cerny dropped a hanging cross against Slavia Prague to allow his former club back into the UEFA Cup last-32 tie, the error inadvertently bringing Paul Robinson back into the spotlight.

Robinson was dropped last month and Cerny had barely put a foot wrong until his return to the Strahov Stadium, with head coach Juande Ramos admitting that he saw nervousness from his current first-choice stopper after Slavia's goal.

Next week's second leg at White Hart Lane is the only match to rebuild confidence before the Wembley showpiece against Chelsea when Spurs look to end their nine-year trophy drought.

"I feel a little bit disappointed," said Cerny. "I know that every player makes a mistake sometime, but I come back to my home town, my old club, and I make a mistake here."

Cerny's mistake led to David Strihavka scoring and only a slender 2-1 advantage, meaning Ramos will have to carefully plot which players to rest for the return match.

"No one is 100% happy about this result," Cerny added. "Everyone told me it happens sometimes.

"I don't know what to say now. But we won this game, that's more important for me and we'll see what's happening next week."

In Robinson's favour is big-match experience for England, while Cerny could point to a solid month since breaking into a team - he made a mistake against Manchester United but it did not turn the match.

Elsewhere in Ramos' team, Ledley King is being prepared for Wembley and the swelling on his knee after games means he is thought to be unlikely to feature in the second leg.

Michael Dawson has a hamstring problem and Gilberto is troubled by a calf complaint, but Alan Hutton can return for the Wembley match after being ineligible for UEFA Cup duty.

Ramos' midfield has been fairly settled, while Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane, who both scored in Prague, lead the attack.

Berbatov insists there will be no thoughts of Wembley until the Slavia match is over.

"It will be a massive three days next week, but there are no easy games anymore," he said. "The most important thing is to get our fitness back and relax.

"We are not talking about Chelsea and Wembley in the dressing room yet. We are concentrating on Slavia Prague first."

For midfielder Tom Huddlestone, he will be playing against the club he supported as a boy if he is selected at Wembley.

"The main things for me is to get myself in the squad though," he said. "And then enjoy the day. At the end of the day it's a football game we've got to win."
